Concrete Paver Molds: The latest Trend in Property Improvement

As a native Californian, I?ve come to accept that house exteriors are pretty much generally constructing utilizing either siding or stucco. Bricks are applied sparingly, if at all, and stonework is commonly confined to indoor tiles and outdoor patio stones, river rock set in gardens, and exposed aggregate patios. Much more often than not, even though, walkways, patios, and driveways are merely poured concrete.

Personally, I?ve constantly been attracted to stonework of all types. Whether it really is a cobblestone driveway, a fireplace created from river rock, or even a ledge stone wall, I feel that stonework adds beauty and interest to a home. Given that stonework can expense upwards of twelve dollars a square foot, nonetheless, I?ve never ever been able to afford to remodel my home employing the stones, rocks, and tiles that so attract me.

Then I ran across an article about concrete paver molds, and discovered that there?s a new trend in residence improvement: producing your personal, custom colored, concrete stones, rocks, tiles, and bricks. I?ve tried it, and with the right Aaron Rodgers Jersey preparation and directions, have discovered that I can make my own building supplies for just pennies. Within a nutshell, here?s how it functions?.

Concrete Molds

First, you will need to begin with top quality concrete molds (even though some people call them cement molds or plaster molds). There are organizations that make concrete stone molds, patio molds, concrete paver molds, stone veneer molds, and brick veneer molds. Based on the type of stone or tile, the mold might cover an location ranging from about 4 square feet to about seven square feet. A ledge stone mold, by way of example, may create 16 ledge stones, whilst a river rock mold may create 12 river rocks. Ideally, you must obtain many molds in order that you might have a rocks or stones with a number of appearances. Keep in mind, even though, that you could use diverse colors or turn stones in distinct direction so that it doesn?t look like you happen to be utilizing duplicate stone or rock shapes.

Preparing Concrete Molds

Once you have your concrete molds and are ready to start your project, you need to apply a mold release product so you can quickly take out the stones, tiles, or bricks when they are finished. Whilst some organizations advocate utilizing motor oil, the run off is negative for the atmosphere. Many of the newer mold release goods will be sprayed into the concrete molds with a spray bottle ? a much preferable technique.

Mixing Colors

The artistry in producing your own concrete rocks, tiles, and bricks is in finding and mixing the colors you like. Initially, you mix a base color into a concrete and sand mixture. Once you have this base color, you may add additional amounts and combinations of color to provide you the variety you seek. Indeed, you may produce an infinite variety of colors basically by adjusting the color densities. The most effective colors are created from synthetic iron oxides, even though some individuals have had good results with all-natural oxides, ceramic stains, and also latex paint.

Concrete Pouring and Curing

Your concrete mixture need to be fairly stiff and not soupy. Using a scoop, you pour the concrete mixture into the concrete paver molds and fill the mold to the best. For those who just want a veneer stone or tile, you may partially fill the mold.

If you?ve ever worked with concrete, you know that it really is critical to get all of the air bubbles out right after a pour. This could be achieved by bouncing the concrete stone molds up and down, or by getting and utilizing a vibrating table. Subsequent, cover the mold in plastic and let it rest out from the direct sunlight.

The longer you let the concrete cure, the stronger it?ll be. The concrete molds and be unmolded after 24 hours, but it really is very best to wait longer. As soon as you release the stones, tiles, or bricks, you?ll want to rewrap them in plastic to preserve the moisture and let them remedy for an added two weeks. Then, you merely must apply sealant to your creations, and they?ll be prepared to install.

I?ve found that able to make a attractive stone pathway, tile entryway, or river rock fireplace is extremely rewarding. And to feel that it all began when I read an report about concrete paver molds.

Blue Heron Moon Webtips: The Power of Pins

I've got to tell you...as a consumer, I am hooked on Pinterest. Pinterest allows me to make a scrapbook of my interests. I can keep track of a reading list, my favorite music, projects for home and family, future purchases and products, things I'd like to do for the holidays, places I want to go...the list goes on and on.

And I have noticed that men are just as likely to have and maintain a Pinterest page as women are. The benefits of Pinterest for small businesses are enormous. But first---Pinterest is not another Facebook. Unless you have a pin that I think will add to my scrapbook I won't follow you or repin you onto my Pinterest page. Give me a great picture of a product I'm dreaming of or something that will help solve a problem I have and I'll pin it to my scrapbook. Give me an idea that I can add to my own project list and I'll repin it to my page. That pin will have a link back to your page and/or website. That pin, if it has enough value, will be repinned over and over again; hitting audiences that your small business never dreamed of.

A picture is worth a thousand words. And on Pinterest your picture can have a major impact.

(AP) ? James Holmes appeared just as dazed as he did in his first court hearing after the deadly Colorado movie theater massacre.

Holmes, 24, sat silently in a packed Denver-area courtroom on Monday, as a judge told him about the charges filed against him, including murder and attempted murder, in one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent U.S. history.

After the charges were read, prosecutors and defense attorneys sparred over whether a notebook that news reports said Holmes sent to his psychiatrist and had descriptions of the attack was privileged information.

It's an argument that foreshadows one of the case's most fundamental issues: Does Holmes have a mental illness and, if so, what role did it play in the shooting that left 12 people dead and 58 others injured?

Sam Kamin, a law professor at the University of Denver, said there is "pronounced" evidence that the attack was premeditated, which would seem to make an insanity defense difficult. "But," he added, "the things that we don't know are what this case is going to hinge on, and that's his mental state."

In all, prosecutors charged Holmes with 142 counts in the shooting rampage at a midnight showing of the new Batman movie.

Holmes faces two first-degree murder charges for each of the 12 people killed and two attempted first-degree murder charges for every one of the 58 injured in the July 20 shooting.

The maximum penalty for a first-degree murder conviction is death. The multiple charges expand the opportunities for prosecutors to obtain convictions.

"It's a much easier way for the prosecution to obtain a conviction," said Denver defense attorney Peter Hedeen. "They throw as many (charges) up as they can. If you think you can prove it three different ways, you charge it three different ways."

Unlike Holmes' first court appearance July 23, Monday's hearing was not televised. At the request of the defense, District Chief Judge William Sylvester barred video and still cameras from the courtroom, saying expanded coverage could interfere with Holmes' right to a fair trial.

A shackled Holmes did not react as the charges were read. At one point, Holmes, his hair still dyed orange-red, leaned over to speak with one of his lawyers and furrowed his brow. When the judge asked him if he was OK with postponing a hearing so his team could have time to prepare, he said softly: "Yeah."

Some court spectators Monday wore Batman T-shirts. Several people clasped their hands and bowed their heads as if in prayer before the hearing. At least one victim attended, and she was in a wheelchair and had bandages on her leg and arm.

Jessica Watts, whose cousin Jonathan Blunk was killed in the shootings, said in a written statement that she believes in the justice system. "He will be held accountable for his actions and we, Jonny's family, will continue to mourn the hole we now have in our lives," she said.

For the murder charges, one count included murder with deliberation, the other murder with extreme indifference. Both counts carry a maximum death penalty upon conviction; the minimum is life without parole.

In addition, Holmes was charged with one count of possession of explosives and one count of a crime of violence. Authorities said Holmes booby trapped his apartment with the intent to kill any officers responding there the night of the attack.

A conviction under the crime of violence charge means that any sentence, including life terms, would have to be served consecutively, not concurrently, said Craig Silverman, a former chief deputy district attorney in Denver.

That ensures that if laws change in the future, the person convicted would still serve a lengthy sentence, Silverman said.

Analysts expect the case to be dominated by arguments over the defendant's sanity.

Under Colorado law, defendants are not legally liable for their acts if their minds are so "diseased" that they cannot distinguish between right and wrong. However, the law warns that "care should be taken not to confuse such mental disease or defect with moral obliquity, mental depravity, or passion growing out of anger, revenge, hatred, or other motives, and kindred evil conditions."

Holmes' public defenders could argue he is not mentally competent to stand trial, which is the argument offered by lawyers for Jared Loughner, who is accused of killing six people in 2011 in Tucson, Ariz., and wounding several others, including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

If Holmes goes to trial and is convicted, his attorneys can try to stave off a possible death penalty by arguing he is mentally ill.

Prosecutors will decide whether to seek the death penalty in the coming weeks.

Defense attorney Tamara Brady said Monday she will subpoena University of Colorado, Denver, psychiatrist Lynne Fenton, whom Holmes had been seeing, to testify in a dispute over whether the notebook is privileged because of a possible doctor-patient relationship.

Arapahoe County District Attorney Carol Chambers disputed news reports that the notebook contained descriptions of an attack.

On Friday, court papers revealed that Holmes was seeing Fenton. They did not say how long or if it was for a mental illness or another problem. An online resume listed schizophrenia as one of Fenon's research interests.

Holmes' public defenders want to know who leaked the information to the news media. Prosecutors say the notebook was inside a package Holmes reportedly sent to Fenton at the university. Holmes came to the school's competitive neuroscience doctoral program in June 2011 and dropped out a year later.

Authorities seized the package July 23, three days after the shooting, in the mailroom of the medical campus where Holmes studied. A hearing on the matter was set for Aug. 16.

Sylvester set an Aug. 9 hearing on news organizations' motion seeking to unseal the case docket.

Sylvester has tried to tightly control the flow of information about Holmes, placing a gag order on lawyers and law enforcement, sealing the court file and barring the university from releasing public records relating to Holmes' year there.

'Booty' ride collects $1.4 million for cancer research ...

Throughout the night, hundreds of cyclists continuously pedaled a 2.85-mile loop to raise money for cancer research.

The 11th annual 24 Hours of Booty charity ride kicked off Friday night in Charlotte, despite rain clouds and thunder, and continued through Saturday. Cancer survivors, cruising in Corvettes and on bicycles, led the pack on the first lap of the ?Booty Loop,? which travels along Queens Road West to Hopedale Avenue to Queens Road to Selwyn Avenue.

Rider Stephen Kibler pedaled for his late son, Camden, who died from leukemia in 2008 at age 5 months. The back of Kibler?s royal blue and white jersey displayed a photo of his son, with a message to riders behind him: ?He had Leukemia. No excuses...Keep Pedaling.?

Kibler said he planned to ride 160 miles ? one for every day Camden was alive. Kibler received ride support from eight other members of ?Team Camden.?

?We are riding to keep his memory alive,? said Patti Moliver, Camden?s cousin.

Myers Park High served as this year?s base camp, also known as Bootyville, for riders and overnight campers. The event accommodates 1,200 cyclists, and another 250 joined to energize the riders on the last day.

Shannon Carney said she rides every year. She battled breast cancer in 2003 and continues to support the charity ride and other survivors.

Carney said she found her key to survival in her friends. Every night before a next-day chemo treatment, Carney gathered with friends for pre-chemo parties of pizza and beer.

?They would fill me up with positive energy,? Carney said. ?My friends got me through it.?

Inspired by survival and hoping to encourage others, Carney established a non-profit, Wind River Cancer Retreat, following her own battle. The retreat, located in Tryon, 90 minutes west of Charlotte, focuses on providing encouragement and strength for those with cancer.

Her advice to those struggling with the illness: ?Take some time out for yourself everyday...just for you.?

Mecklenburg County Manager Harry Jones, who was diagnosed with stage-four pancreatic cancer in December 2011, shared his story with survivors at the event?s breakfast Saturday morning.

He said during his treatment, he focused on his sister?s advice. ???Harry, you can beat this, but you?ve got to believe you can???. Today, that?s the advice he passes along to patients he encounters.

As of Saturday afternoon, the Charlotte ride collected more than $1.4 million for cancer research, according to the event?s website.

Organizations receiving funds from the ride include Levine Cancer Institute, the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the Keep Pounding Fund at Carolinas Medical Center, the Brain Tumor Fund for the Carolinas, and the Be The Match Foundation.

Since Spencer Lueders of Charlotte founded the ride in 2002, 24 Hours of Booty has raised about $7 million for research. The once local-only ride, now has host cities from Atlanta to Indianapolis.

Lueders said he felt compelled to start the ride not because he had cancer, but because he was inspired by the story of cyclist and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong. ?I wanted to do something that would make an impact,? he said.

10 reasons to drop Windows for Mountain Lion

18 hrs.

I guess you could say I started cheating on Windows back in October of 2010. That?s when Apple debuted the revamped?MacBook Air. For the first time, I could resume working almost as soon as I flipped the lid on a laptop, thanks to the way the?notebook?leveraged its flash memory. (Intel and?Ultrabook?makers wouldn?t offer a similar instant-on experience until a year later.)

The Air was a work of art, but it didn?t feel complete until?OS X Lion?arrived last year. With key time-saving features like Auto Save and Mission Control for faster multitasking, I started leaving behind my Windows notebook more and more.?Now that?Mountain Lion?is here, I may never look back. Here are 10 reasons why you might want to do the same.

iCloud Keeps Devices, Files in Sync

Make a change on a Pages document in Mountain Lion and iCloud will automatically update it on your iPad. It doesn't get any easier than that if you happen to own Apple's slate. You don't even have to think about whether to bring your MacBook or iPad with you when you leave the house, because everything is already in sync.

iCloud also keeps your Numbers and Keynote files up to date, and neatly presents all of your recent documents when you open any of the above apps. I just wish Apple's iWork suite could automatically save docs as Office-friendly versions by default for sharing with Windows users; instead, you have to check off a box every time.

Reminders App Uses Your Location

What's the point of putting together a to-do list if you're not going to follow through? The Reminders app in Mountain Lion vastly increases the chances you're going to cross more stuff off by the end of the day.

For starters, you can pin any list to your desktop just by double-clicking it, so you'll be less likely to ignore those tasks. Second ? and this is a biggie for me ? you can add a location to specific reminders. For example, just this morning I set a reminder to pick up my TransitChek card for when I arrived at work, and my iPhone buzzed as I emerged from the subway. I have no excuses now.

AirPlay Mirroring Transforms TV?

Usually when I pull out my laptop out at home, the kids moan and groan that daddy is about to do work again. But Mountain Lion's AirPlay Mirroring feature instantly changed their minds. With a single click I started streaming photos I took at a nearby park to an Apple TV. Then I streamed a trailer for "Ice Age 4" from YouTube.

Even better, I could mirror a game of ?RC Mini Racers? from the Mac to my HDTV, and within seconds the kids wanted to take over. AirPlay Mirroring is so simple to set up compared to Intel's WiDi and any DLNA solution on the Windows side, I can easily see Apple TVs popping up in classrooms and conference rooms.

Speak to Type

Take this down, Microsoft. Mountain Lion converts your words into text anywhere you can type. This is a great way to compose memos, emails or even tweet when your hands are full. It couldn?t be easier to start dictating. Just double tap the Function key to bring up a little microphone, then tap it again to finish. While we wish dictation worked offline, it has proved accurate in our testing, including punctuation.

Send and Receive Texts from the Desktop

When I?m at work I find texts on my iPhone pretty distracting, so I welcome the new Messages application for Mountain Lion. It integrates iMessages and all of your favorite IM clients (AIM, Google Talk, Yahoo, Jabber, etc.) into a single app. This way I can communicate with my wife when she?s on her iPhone right from the desktop. And if she sends me a photo I can double-click it to make it bigger and then share it on Facebook.

Game Center: Take That, Xbox

There?s no question that Windows still trumps the Mac when it comes to the number of games available, but Mountain Lion brings a secret weapon. With Game Center your Mac can tap into a community that has grown to 130 million iOS gamers, enabling you to compare scores and achievements across both Mac and iOS games. Plus, a growing number of titles let you challenge your buddies on their iPhone and iPad, such as ?Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy.?

Faster, Smarter Browsing With Safari?

As someone who constantly has too many tabs open, the new Tab View is a godsend for me. Just pinch to zoom out, and you?ll see large thumbnails of all of your open tabs, making it easier to see what?s what and decide what to close.

Safari is smarter than Windows? Internet Explorer in other ways. The new unified address bar is another huge time-saver, which presents Top Sites, recommended Google Search results and bookmarks and your surfing history as you type.

Notifications All In One Place

While I like the way Windows 8 shows your notifications within its Live Tiles for apps, Mountain Lion?s Notification Center makes it easier to see all of your alerts at a glance. Notification Center is also highly customizable. You can choose how many alerts you want to display from each app and the order of how they appear. Plus, you can turn all of the notifications off with a click when you need to be heads down. Bonus: you can post right to Twitter and Facebook from this menu.

Mail VIPs: Never Miss an Email from Your Boss

This unsung feature of Mountain Lion makes it easy to set up an instant folder of messages for very important people, whether it?s your boss, spouse or anyone else whose emails you simply cannot miss.

All you have to do is star that person?s name from within a message and you?ll have a VIP folder. You can even tweak the settings so that you?ll only get Notifications when new messages from VIPs arrive.

It?s More Like Windows Than Windows 8

Recently, Current Analysis analyst Avi Greengart issued this tweet: ?OS X Mountain Lion is a more natural upgrade from Windows 7 than moving to Windows 8.? There?s actually some truth to this comment because Windows 8 represents a radical user interface change for the world?s most popular desktop OS. Mountain Lion may borrow plenty of elements from iOS, from Launchpad to apps like Notes, but it?s still very much a traditional operating system. In Windows 8, the desktop is its own app, which may prove jarring to a lot of users. Mountain Lion could very well be that more familiar alternative.

State Baseball: Early Runs Propel Decorah to Class 3A State Championship Game

DECORAH ? Way back when, these Decorah Vikings weren?t very good.

?We were pretty mediocre the first half of the season,? Coach Dennis Olejniczak admitted.

Just look at them now, on the verge of the school?s first state baseball championship in 21 years after wiping off Sioux City Heelan, 7-2, Friday afternoon in a snappily played Class 3A semifinal at Principal Park.

There have been a lot of people quick to criticize Cedar Rapids Jefferson for the way it handled the recent dismissal of long-time softball coach Larry Niemeyer. Coincidentally, the 72-year-old Olejniczak has turned his club from chumps to possible champs in about a month and a half.

Decorah (28-10) plays No. 1 Dallas Center-Grimes (35-2) for the title Saturday night at 6. It?s the sixth trip to the finals for the Vikings, their first since 1992.

Their last championship was 1991.

?I don?t know. I guess we just started having a different mindset,? said sophomore pitcher Kyle Kane, who improved to 12-1 by effectively throwing the first five innings.

?We?ve really jelled as team, I think,? added shortstop Jacob Kvale. ?We hold each other accountable for what we need to get done. If we don?t get something done that we should have, we let each other know about it ? We play as a team. There is no one person on this team above anyone else. It?s a great situation.?

The Vikings scored three times each in the first and second innings to take a surprising 6-0 lead against higher-seeded Heelan (6 against 2). The Crusaders booted and threw the ball around, but Decorah also hit it, with seven of its eight hits coming in that span.

Kvale?s run-scoring single up the middle in the third made it a 7-1 game and was the final Vikings baserunner. Kale Provost came on in relief for Heelan (35-11) and retired the final 10 hitters he saw, but Kane and reliever Landon Ashbacher kept the Crusaders at bay, with help from their defense, which had three double plays.

?Heelan is a good hitting team, we knew that,? Kvale said. ?So we knew that we?d have to come out and score runs. That was the mentality we had. We couldn?t sit around and wait for them to strike first. We had to make sure we jumped on top. Our pitchers really did a nice job of shutting them down today. I can?t say enough about their performance: Kyle and Landon.?

Olejniczak can?t say enough about the performance he has seen from his kids. A 16-1 record down the stretch isn?t bad.

?In the second half of the season, with the first game of the second half of our conference season, we?ve played Decorah baseball,? he said. ?It?s our style of baseball. We don?t backhand (a grounder) unless we?re absolutely desperate. I want the ball to hit my body ? We do things pretty old fashioned. Fortunately, it still works.?

?Coach has pushed to be where we?re at right now, and that?s great,? Kvale said. ?He?s a lot of fun, he has a lot of energy. He really keeps us going with his energy, we feed off of it. It makes practice fun. It?s never dull. He always pushes us to be our best, and that?s something that we appreciate.?

Olejniczak ? who has 1,294 career wins ? already has signed a contract to return for his 50th season at Decorah next year.

?These kids, and I say this from the bottom of my heart, are pretty much like the kids I started coaching in 1963 and ?64,? he said. ?Our kids are still pretty cooperative. Now we?ve got a kid or two that has balked and bucked a little bit on the team, too. But they?ve come back into the fold.

?I asked them last year ?What?s better, commom sense or knowledge?? They said different things. I told them ?Well, why can?t we have both?? Some of them have gotten a lot more common sense in the second half of this year, knowing that there are people that want to help them that they weren?t listening to the first half of the season.?

BVRLA publishes Guide to Vehicle Funding | Fleet Directory News

The British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association has published the latest edition of its vehicle funding guide to help businesses exploring their fleet funding options.

Available now from the BVRLA?s website, the Guide to Vehicle Funding has been produced taking into account tax changes from March?s Budget and to help fleet bosses choose the most appropriate way of financing their vehicles.

Readers can compare the key features and accounting treatments of different funding methods including contract hire, finance lease, contract purchase, hire or lease purchase and outright purchase.

BVRLA Chief Executive John Lewis said: ?Credit is not as easy to find as it used to be, but locating independent information about different funding methods is almost as great a challenge.

?With companies focusing so hard now on the whole-life cost and tax-efficiency of their fleets, it is more important than ever to choose the right type of vehicle finance.?

Dan Rees from Deloitte, which helped produce the guide along with Peugeot, said: ?Various changes to tax rules have meant that there can be a big difference between the least and most expensive options, which is accentuated by the financial position of the acquiring company and the type of vehicle.

?We recommend checking the financial comparison between buying or leasing a fleet car, particularly if this hasn?t been reviewed for some years.?

Choosing The Right Dog Door | Arty Apt

The screen dog door needs to be high and wide enough so that your dog can freely push and step through it without any hesitation. The dog ought to be able to fit into the space you have provided ? it should not be too tight nor too big for him. There has to be some allowance, but only enough to made sliding through comfortable. Anything bigger can pose security threats.

Patio pet doors come with a security lock. This is a simple yet effective pin lock that will lock your current sliding door to the patio pet door. Patio door installation is so simple and easy. At the same time, it won?t cost you big bucks since patio pet doors of any size and color are offered in very reasonable prices.

Incorporate some sit-stay lessons into your walks. A thinking dog uses up as much energy as a running dog. Toss a Kong a few feet from your dog while in a sit-stay position. Release him to fetch after a few seconds. Treats and verbal praise follow. Great fun for you and your dog and an enjoyable way to teach her an important control lesson.

No matter what type of dog door you decide to install in your home, you should at a minimum consider the following features. For security purposes, it is best to get a dog door that can be securely locked. If you already have one that cannot be properly locked, you can purchase a pane that can drop into place over the hole.

There?s one thing that works against traditional dog doors: if an animal is chasing or following our dog, it can do so even inside our house. The advent of electronic pet doors has brought in inexplicable convenience and security to our dogs at home. Before you resort to the purchase of electronic dog doors, it is imperative that you understand the types of electronic pet doors available for that would help you in making the right and the most apt choice for your pet on the fly.

electronic dog doors

Dog doors come in a wide variety of styles, shapes and sizes. One of the first things you will need to consider when looking for one is, of course, the size of your dog or pet. (Dog doors can be used for other kinds of pets besides just dogs.) If the door you choose is too large, you not only waste a tremendous amount of space, there is also the remote possibility that it may not work for your pet. If, on the other hand, the door is too small, well, I?ll let you figure that one out on your own.

Excellent quality and extreme functional design are the major features of this door. It is very easy to dismantle and relocate. With a pre-installed dog door, you can decide when you want to let your dog out and when you want it in. Some pre-installed dog doors are electronic and are operated by a sensor or computer chip in the dog?s collar. Most models come with a template and an instruction manual.

Electronic signal dog doors, that are usually installed straight into any exterior door, include a sensor that can sense whenever your cat or dog really wants to go out or come in. Your dog could have a certain electronic signal transmitter which can be attached with your dog?s collar there is a sensor in the door which will recognize the unique transmission from the pet?s collar device. The entranceway will simply open if they are near. Each collar device has its own unique code which makes it nearly impossible for the signal being reproduced by way of a burglar. The door sensor has the capacity to educate pet apart from any other unwanted animal guest or any other pet which may in addition have a sensor collar.

But evoke: dog doors do not dynamic in humans. still most of these places are too small for people to crawl through, there is still that possibility while they are definite ally tinged for small animals. So keep an eye on your bolting process periodically and make indeed you correctly extent the door beforehand so that only you?re pet can fit through it.

A dog door for inside your house is different than one designed for the outside. These are used for keeping your pet separated from other areas of your home and can easily be moved from one area of the house to another. The design of these types of pet doors can vary significantly depending on the size of your pet and how it will be used.

That is the reflex that makes sled dogs do what they do-pull. Selecting a quality pet door can help save energy during the hot and cold seasons.

EYES ON LONDON: Double-amputee star runner arrives

LONDON (AP) ? Around the 2012 Olympics and its host city with journalists from The Associated Press bringing the flavor and details of the games to you:

___

PREPPED FOR HISTORY

Double-amputee runner Oscar Pistorius has arrived in London for his historic debut at the Olympics and says he's feeling "a mixture of pride, happiness and anticipation" at the end of his long journey to compete at the highest level in able-bodied competition.

Pistorius made the short flight across from his training camp in northern Italy and says he's "really excited" to attend the opening ceremony.

The South African has been battling for four years to reach the 2012 games. He was cleared to compete against able-bodied competitors on his carbon fiber blades in 2008, ran two qualifying times for London in the last 12 months, but missed out on the crucial third under his country's strict qualifying criteria.

But the selectors had a last-minute change of heart weeks before the games and picked him for the individual 400 meters as well as the 4x400 relay.

In an email to the AP, Pistorius says: "This feels like a long time coming and I am ready! This is going to be, I hope, an incredible few weeks of my life."

His first run at the Olympics will be in the 400 heats on Aug. 4. It'll be history.

DIPLOMATIC MARATHON

It sounds almost as exhausting as the sport.

Britain's foreign policy chief William Hague is carrying out a frantic round of Olympic diplomacy, greeting foreign dignitaries arriving for the Summer Games ? and taking a chance to press them over trade, the Middle East and the violence in Syria.

Already, Hague has met with the prime ministers of Haiti, Lebanon, Kosovo, Panama's president and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. In the coming days he has talks scheduled with VIPs from Bangladesh, India, Singapore and New Zealand.

LITTLE BOYS?

The British men's volleyball team is playing in its first-ever Olympics. But truth be told, if the men hadn't earned an automatic berth as the host nation, they likely wouldn't be there.

The team is currently ranked 92nd in the world, and admittedly are a long shot for the gold. "Everybody sees us as the little boys of the volleyball competition. I hope we surprise some people," coach Harry Brokking says.

HIDDEN CEREMONY

Britain's women's footballers say they will wear their opening ceremony uniforms even though they'll be about 155 miles (250 kilometers) away in Wales.

But they'll have to draw the curtains ? at least until late at night.

They have a special room to watch the ceremony on television but they'll not be allowed to be seen in their uniforms until the British team is introduced for its parade at about 11 p.m. local time.

Coach Hope Powell says "the girls really just want to embrace it and be part of it" but admits: "It will be odd."

SUDAN DENIES ASYLUM REPORT

Here's a reaction just in from the Sudanese Embassy, denying reports that one of its Olympic runners has applied for asylum in the U.K.

"We herewith categorically refute allegations ... that a Sudanese member of those who qualified for the Olympic competition and have arrived in London is either missing (or) sought political asylum."

The male Olympian reportedly showed up Tuesday night at a police station near the northern English city of Leeds.

___

RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE

Draped in a British flag, 35-year-old Greg Kemp struck a pose below the Orbit, just outside Olympic Stadium shortly after entering the stadium.

The London native can't help but reflect on what his city has been through to get to this point.

"I remember winning the bid and the next day the bombings," Kemp says. "And from there to standing here and it's actually done, it's pretty spectacular.

"It's the journey of a city, isn't it? In 10 years' time, this is the history of London. And to make it to here, it's the center of the universe in my opinion and it's the greatest city in the world."

FOOD WITH NO NAME

Food choices are simple at the ExCel arena, the giant convention center hosting seven Olympic disciplines. Because McDonald's has exclusive rights to sell branded products, the dozen concessions at the venue are prohibited from using a specific name.

So, here's what's on offer on large signs:

?"Traditional Roast."

?"Sandwich."

?"Bagel"

?"Italian" or "Chinese."

? "Baked Potato" ? which, by the way, is often called a "jacket potato" in these parts.

CAGE FIGHTERS ... AND DOGS?

Timmy Duggan tried to come up with a way of describing what it's like to be a cyclist during a marquee event, and he left the rest of the American team in stitches.

"You have to have the endurance of a Siberian Husky for the five minutes of the race that truly matters," the first-time Olympian opined, "and it's the strength of an ultimate cage fighter, with fighter-pilot reactions, which is a pretty cool sport, when you think about it."

Duggan certainly won't be making any friends with mixed martial artists, though.

"We're pushing ourselves much harder than you even can in something like cage fighting," Duggan said. "We're going so hard that you can't stand up anymore. We just keep killing ourselves."

For the record, Duggan doesn't own a Siberian Husky, though he admitted that "I've read a lot of books about dog racing." And as for fighting, well ...

"I wouldn't take my chances," he said. "That's why I'm a bike racer."

KEEP DREAM-ING

You get the sense that LeBron James doesn't want to hear another word about it.

"Who's better ? 1992 or 2012?" That's been a talking point for weeks, the comparison between the 1992 Dream Team that went to Barcelona and this year's Olympic team.

"It's never going to happen," James said Friday of a hypothetical game between the two teams. "It doesn't matter how much conversation that we have about this team and the '92 Dream Team. It's never going to be played. Father Time is not going to allow that to happen. So it doesn't even matter."

That wasn't his way of downplaying expectations about what to expect from the U.S. squad in London.

Quite the contrary.

James, who won the NBA MVP award, the NBA Finals MVP award and led the Miami Heat to the title this past season, is fully expecting to add Olympic gold to his unbelievable year.

"I know one thing," James said. "I know we have a great team. And if we play as a team, like we're capable of doing, we can be one of the best teams ever assembled.

? Tim Reynolds ? Twitter http://www.twitter.com/ByTimReynolds

___

IT'S CALLED RACE WALKING

Of all the sports to watch at the Olympics, race walking is probably not No. 1 on many people's lists. But three-time NBA scoring champion Kevin Durant can't wait to check it out.

The Oklahoma Thunder star singled out the event Friday when asked what he plans to watch during his free time in London. That's when he's not trying to help Team USA win a second straight gold medal.

Mind you, he didn't get the name of the sport quite right.

"I want to watch some speed walking," he said, using the incorrect term for the event. "I didn't even know that was an Olympic sport."

? Peter Wilson ? Twitter http://twitter.com/peterrwilson

___

TENNIS CHANGE

Update the roster at Wimbledon for Olympic tennis.

Laura Robson of Britain will play singles at the Olympics, replacing Petra Martic of Croatia after she pulled out because of injury.

Robson, a hometown fan favorite who is also playing doubles, will face Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic in the first round. Robson won the Wimbledon junior title in 2008, and expectations have been high ever since. But she has won only one of her five matches in four main draw appearances.

The last British woman to win the Wimbledon titles was Virginia Wade in 1977.

?Chris Lehourites ? Twitter http://twitter.com/chrislehourites

___

AT OLYMPIC STADIUM

Olympic workers, concessionaires and opening ceremony participants are hustling around Olympic Stadium trying to put the final pieces in place for Friday night's opening ceremony.

Drinks are being transported, dance routines practiced and security workers are taking pains to keep passers by from entering the stadium while final preparations continue.

I did catch a quick glimpse before being turned away, seeing a stage with some sort of cottage as the centerpiece. Your guess is as good as mine.

ARE YOU TAYLOR'S MOM?

Connie Carpenter-Phinney has quite an athletic resume. She went to the Olympics in speed skating. She won Olympic gold as a cyclist.

And in London, she's probably best known for something else.

Here's a tip: If you want to get on her good side immediately, approach her and ask, "Are you Taylor Phinney's mom?"

"That's the best thing you could say to me," Carpenter-Phinney says.

Fittingly, she was one of the headline attractions Friday at the opening of the P&G U.S. Family Home in London. It's a place where Olympic moms can have a "home away from home" as part of the sponsor's "Thank you, Mom" campaign.

The Phinneys are the first family of cycling in the U.S. Davis Phinney, the dad, won stages of the Tour de France during his pro career, and Connie Carpenter-Phinney took the Olympic title at Los Angeles in 1984. (Davis Phinney won bronze there as well.) And now their oldest kid is about to compete in his second Olympics.

"I couldn't be prouder," his mom says.

Peugeot Citroen in H1 loss as Europe hits business

PARIS (AP) ? Tough conditions in Europe pushed carmaker PSA Peugeot Citroen into a first half loss of ?819 million ($990 million), just as the company faces off with the French government over its restructuring plan.

The maker of two-thirds of France's cars is in a tailspin as a deepening recession in many markets in Europe takes its toll on its business ? Europe is Peugeot's main market. The company's share price has more than halved since March.

The first-half loss contrasts starkly with a profit of ?805 million in the same period last year and came on the back of a 5.1 percent fall in revenue to ?29.6 billion.

The company doesn't expect Europe to pick up anytime soon, saying Wednesday that it expects its European market to contract by 8 percent this year.

In response, Peugeot announced earlier this month that it would close a major factory in France and cut 8,000 jobs ? part of a plan to save ?2.5 billion by 2015. Those savings will also come from efficiencies gained by an alliance with General Motors. About half ? ?1 billion ? of those savings will come this year alone.

"The group is facing a difficult time," Chairman Philippe Varin said. "The depth and persistence of the crisis impacting our business in Europe requires the launch of the reorganization of our French production and a reduction in our structural costs."

But the company's cost-cutting plans have run afoul of President Francois Hollande's Socialist administration, which has said the restructuring is unacceptable and that it will force Peugeot to save some of the jobs it wants to eliminate.

On Wednesday, the government will unveil a plan to support the auto industry ? part of its carrot-and-stick strategy with Peugeot. It's expected to give incentives to French consumers to buy French cars and to support the clean-energy vehicles that the company excels at.

But much of Peugeot's problems stem from an over-supplied European car market, and it's unclear how much the government can do for the company. France's car industry was already given a bailout under former President Nicolas Sarkozy.

The Case For A Strategic Plan | PPAI Publications

Why engage in strategic planning? Many successful companies have achieved their success without a strategic plan. Others have engaged in strategic planning only to have the resulting plan encased in a binder and placed on a shelf to gather dust. (We call these plans vinyl trophies or strategic bookends.) So why bother?

I posed this question to Dr. Steve Barone, president and founder of Transformation ?Systems Ltd., a firm specializing in strategic planning for national and international organizations. His answer was simple: ?The principal reason to do strategic planning is because you believe your company will be in business in the future.?

Barone believes planning is simply preparing for the future. ?You really only have three options. You can wait to see what the future will bring and try to respond to it. You can guess what the future will hold and prepare for that. Or, you can create your own future by imagining what you want the future to be and plan for it.?

Most companies opt for the wait-and-see approach. They do so either because they are unable to imagine the future or because they believe their organization will react sufficiently when it comes. Unfortunately, organizations that wait are forever on the opposite side of the leading edge?they exist on the ?bleeding edge? and typically fail to position themselves to take advantage of new or evolving opportunities. Companies that find themselves unable or slow to respond risk losing loyal customers to industry competitors.

Those that guess are not much better off. ?It?s like playing a game of craps,? says Barone. ?The house always wins. The odds are never really 50-50. You may win a few. But if all you have is a guess, in the end the house will win and you will lose.? As for those who rely on their ?gut,? intuition is really just an informed guess and shares the same poor odds. Sure, guesses may have worked in the past and could work in the future?they are just less likely to do so.

Those companies that choose the path of planning have a fundamental belief that the future is coming and there is something they can do to influence the outcome. A comprehensive 10-year study of successful companies titled ?What Really Works? and published in the Harvard Business Review revealed the factors that differentiate successful companies from their peers are leadership and strategic planning. Without exception, companies that outperformed their industry peers excelled at what the authors call the four primary management practices?strategy, execution, culture and structure, according to the study.

In its truest form, planning is simply a process of envisioning the future and declaring what you want to be. It doesn?t require an MBA; it requires imagination. It is an acknowledgment that what got you to where you are today may not be what will get you where you need to be in the future. It?s a lesson that many promotional products companies grapple with today.

In working with one PPAI member company, we asked a simple question, ?What do you imagine you will be doing five years from now?? It was a tough question. This 20-year old distributorship had evolved from the print forms and labels industry and was now heavily into promotional products. Their answer was honest: ?We don?t know. We couldn?t have imagined that we would be in promotional products five years ago, and yet here we are. How do we know what we will be doing in five years??

This is where the strategic thinking comes in?maybe you don?t know what technology you will be using or what actual products you will be selling, but do you know what your clients will be saying about you? When faced with this question, the PPAI member said, ?Well, whatever we?re into, I imagine we will be helping our clients promote their image, reputation and services.?? From this came the vision that they would be solutions providers to help clients promote themselves in any avenue and way they require.

This vision is miles away from printing forms or providing promotional apparel?it requires the company to remain abreast of new technology, multi-channel advertising and promotional avenues to enable them to present themselves as true solutions partners. They would not have reached this point had they not gone through the strategic planning exercise.

To those companies who think they are too small to do strategic planning, I would only point to the fact that most career coaching is, in its truest form, strategic planning on an individual level. Even a sole proprietor can strategically plan what industry she will be in, what revenues she would like, what niche she would like to occupy and how she might get there. What it requires is imagination, a dedication of time and space, and possibly a little facilitation.

And what about all those vinyl trophies gathering dust on corporate bookshelves across the country? Planning failures tend not to be the result of poor planning. Instead they are usually the result of poor implementation. Barone says planning is not for the faint of heart?it requires bold, brave leadership. ?To implement something new requires doing something new. Unfortunately, old habits and pre-existing behaviors usually trump new ones.?

Leaders at all levels of the organization (formal and informal) need to be dedicated to executing and sticking to the plan. Small steps are fine. But retreating to old habits will ensure a planning failure.

So, are there any guarantees that planning will bring success? Unfortunately, no. But armed with a plan, a dose of courage and a dedication to implementation, the odds favor planning over guessing or waiting by a large margin.
