Great Britain medal hope and current world taekwondo champion Sarah Stevenson has crashed out of London 2012 in the first round. Sarah Stevenson suffered a shock 5-1 defeat in the first round (Picture: PA) Stevenson, who won bronze in Beijing four years ago, was a firm medal hope for Team GB but fell at the first hurdle of her women?s -67kg campaign, losing 5-1 to Paige McPherson of the USA. The Doncaster athlete has been struggling with injury leading up to the Games, but says that didn?t contribute to her surprise defeat. ?I tried my best, and it has been hard. I had to come here, and go for it, I thought I could do it,? she said. ?The injury did not play a part today. It has been a mental fight every day for the last 18 months, and I did my best.? The 29-year-old, who lost both of her parents to cancer prior to becoming world champion last year, could still fight for bronze at London 2012, should Paige McPherson reach the final. ?My mum and dad would have wanted me to be here, and they would have been proud,? she said. ?I would have been forgiven for sitting and crying in a corner, but I am not a quitter.? Meanwhile controversial selection, Lutalo Muhammad, progressed to this afternoon?s quarter-finals after a final round victory over Farkhod Negmatov of Tajikstan. Lutalo Muhammad faces a lot of pressure at London 2012 after being selected ahead of Aaron Cook (Picture: AFP/Getty) Muhammad was selected for the Games ahead of European Champion Aaron Cook, but his 7-1 win over Negmatov has gone some way to proving the selectors correct. ?I am just glad to get through, it all came together in the end. The atmosphere is fantastic, and I feel a lot better now I have got my first fight out of the way,? said the 21-year-old. ?All the build-up did not matter, it is like any other tournament, and I feel a lot better off now I am through.? He will now have to wait until 3:45pm for his quarter-final fight. Pictures: Shots from yesterday?s taekwondo action at the ExCel Arena
