JinkoSolar, Solea Renewables to install 1MW utility scale PV system in South Africa

CTBR Staff Writer Published 31 August 2012

Solar power product manufacturer JinkoSolar will partner Solea Renewables to install a 1MW utility scale photovoltaic system at the Limpopo province chrome mine in South Africa.

The system is expected to produce 1.8GWh electricity per annum and help reduce the mine's dependency on diesel.

The fully integrated turnkey PV system will be designed, engineered and constructed by Solea Renewables employing 4,170 polycrystalline PV panels to be supplied by JinkoSolar.

Solea Renewables director Vusi Mhlanzi remarked increasing demand for minerals and metals from South Africa has created power supply constraints, leading miners and government to explore for alternative solutions.

"As the plant is expected to be completed by late October, 2012, the electricity generated by JinkoSolar quality solar panels will definitely reduce the mine's daytime diesel consumption while securing our client's with a natural long-term hedge against all rising costs of power," said Mhlanzi.

JinkoSolar CEO Kangping Chen added, "We have great expectations for South Africa."

"The region's booming population, strong economic growth and abundant sunlight represent an exciting opportunity for solar and for JinkoSolar."

Global shares dip, euro gains ahead of Bernanke speech

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Global stocks fell on Thursday on uncertainty over the prospect for economic stimulus by the U.S. Federal Reserve while the euro edged up after China voiced some support for the debt-troubled euro zone.

A successful Italian bond sale pointed to growing confidence among investors that the European Central Bank will take measures shortly to tackle more effectively the debt crisis that has plagued the 17-member currency bloc.

Investors waited to see if Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke delivers firmer hints on more monetary easing at a meeting of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming on Friday.

U.S. and European stocks declined as investors closed out positions ahead of Bernanke's speech, which is expected to provide some clues to the Fed's next move.

"People are taking money off the table ahead of the Fed meeting, but this isn't a panic move as seen by all sectors being impacted about the same," said Jerry Harris, president of asset management at Sterne Agee in Birmingham, Alabama.

"I wouldn't call this a run from risky assets. We were overdue for some profit taking."

All 10 S&P sectors were lower. The cyclical groups, which closely track the pace of economic growth, declined.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was down 91.33 points, or 0.70 percent, at 13,016.15. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was down 9.92 points, or 0.70 percent, at 1,400.57. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was down 27.43 points, or 0.89 percent, at 3,053.75.

In Europe, the FTSEurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> of top European shares was down 0.6 percent at 1,079.39.

MSCI's all-country world equity index <.miwd00000pus>, which has edged down over the past seven sessions, was 0.8 percent lower at 320.73.

Any signal from Bernanke that the U.S. central bank will embark on another asset buying program would weigh broadly on the dollar.

The euro was up 0.2 percent at $1.2501, while the U.S. dollar index <.dxy> was up 0.2 percent at 81.676.

A rise above $1.2590 would mark the euro's strongest level in eight weeks.

Investors and economists have become more skeptical over the past two weeks that the Fed will announce another round of bond buying, or "quantitative easing," at its mid-September meeting, according to Reuters polls during the last week.

"The risk with Jackson Hole is that unless there are further strong signals of more easing, the market will take it as a disappointment," said Christian Lawrence, currency strategist at Rabobank, adding that this would be positive for the dollar.

"The bar is quite high, and if there is any paring back of talk of QE, the market is likely to react more because it is more or less expecting it."

The euro gained some support after Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, who met German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Beijing on Thursday, said he was confident the euro zone could pull out of its debt crisis and that China would be willing, after a proper risk assessment, to keep buying the region's government debt.

U.S. Treasuries gained in price. Discounting the likelihood of the Fed's launching new stimulus when it meets next month has been the predominant trade in recent weeks despite uncertainty over what debt would be purchased in any new program.

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was up 7/32 in price to yield 1.6276 percent.

Growing expectations of a beefed-up bond-buying program from the ECB encouraged solid demand at a sale of 7.3 billion euros ($9.15 billion) of new five- and 10-year Italian sovereign bonds on Thursday.

Oil futures slid below $113 a barrel as investors looked to forthcoming data to shed light on the direction Bernanke might take. The Chicago Purchasing Managers Index and factory orders are due out on Friday and could shed light on the economy of the world's largest crude buyer.

Brent crude for October delivery fell 2 cents to $112.52 a barrel. U.S. crude fell for a second session, down $1.23 to $94.26 a barrel.

Researchers simulate volcanic eruptions: Large-scale experiment to shed light on powerful natural disaster

ScienceDaily (Aug. 14, 2012) ? A voice carried across the treeless plateau: "Fire in the hole! The range is now active."

Two dozen people fell silent before a muffled blast sent a geyser-like shower of crushed gravel, limestone and asphalt roughly 50 feet in the air. Moments later, standing at the blast site, University at Buffalo geology professor Greg Valentine gave an impromptu assessment.

"That was great. It was exactly what we expected," said Valentine, PhD, director of UB's Center for Geohazards Studies.

The experiment, a rare large-scale attempt to simulate volcanic eruptions, is drawing international attention because it will provide much-needed insight into one of Earth's most powerful and mysterious natural disasters. If that wasn't enough, it may help mining companies find diamonds.

A short video of the experimental blast is available here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeN7R_H5N8w.

When most people think of volcanoes, images of exploding mountain tops come to mind. There is another type of volcano, however, called a maar. They feature large craters, often topped by a pool of water, near mountain ranges. Maars range from a few hundred feet to more than a mile across.

The UB-funded experiment, which took place on land owned by Cheektowaga-based Calspan Corp., focused on maars. It unfolded over several days in July. The idea, according to Valentine, was not to determine how or when eruptions will occur, but rather to figure out what happens during and after an eruption.

Do subsequent eruptions cause the crater to expand? Will the volcano spew enough ash to affect air travel, as did the 2010 volcanic eruption in Iceland?

To help answer those questions, Valentine and researchers built three test beds, each 12-feet-by-12-feet square, and packed them with gravel, limestone and asphalt, 3 to 3-1/2 feet deep. Explosives roughly as powerful as a grenade were placed in post holes and detonated.

Because volcanic eruptions are naturally occurring, each with their own distinct features, it isn't possible to exactly replicate one, Valentine said. But the test beds are an accurate barometer to base conclusions on because researchers can control the strength of the blast, he said.

The experiment drew the attention of Jacopo Taddeucci, PhD, a volcanologist at the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Rome, Italy. He flew into Buffalo for the occasion to use high-speed cameras to record the explosions.

"Large-scale experiments like this are quite rare," he said in between blasts.

It also piqued the interest of Manoranjan Majii, PhD, an assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at UB. Majii used the experiment to test software he developed that provides near instantaneous 3-D imagery of Earth's surface, including craters.

While it's too early to draw conclusions, the experiment could provide insight into the location of diamonds. The valuable gemstone is brought close to Earth's surface by the funnel-shaped mass of magma and broken rock that form under volcanoes, Valentine said.

He will spend the next few months analyzing results of the experiment before reporting his findings in a yet-to-be determined academic journal. For the time being though, Valentine said he is happy with the results.

"I've learned more today, without analyzing this entirely, as I would if I spent an entire year reading technical papers."

According to new research from Brigham and Women's Hospital, migraines are not associated with cognitive decline

Boston, MAMigraines currently affect about 20 percent of the female population, and while these headaches are common, there are many unanswered questions surrounding this complex disease. Previous studies have linked this disorder to an increased risk of stroke and structural brain lesions, but it has remained unclear whether migraines had other negative consequences such as dementia or cognitive decline. According to new research from Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), migraines are not associated with cognitive decline.

This study is published online by the British Medical Journal (BMJ) on August 8, 2012. "Previous studies on migraines and cognitive decline were small and unable to identify a link between the two. Our study was large enough to draw the conclusion that migraines, while painful, are not strongly linked to cognitive decline," explained Pamela Rist ScD, a research fellow in the Division of Preventive Medicine at BWH, and lead author on this study.

The research team analyzed data from the Women's Health Study, a cohort of nearly 40,000 women, 45 years and older. In this study, researchers analyzed data from 6,349 women who provided information about migraine status at baseline and then participated in cognitive testing during follow-up. Participants were classified into four groups: no history of migraine, migraine with aura (transient neurology symptoms mostly of the visual field), migraine without aura, and past history of migraine. Cognitive testing was carried out in two year intervals up to three times.

"Compared with women with no history of migraine, those who experienced migraine with or without aura did not have significantly different rates of cognitive decline," explained Rist. "This is an important finding for both physicians and patients. Patients with migraine and their treating doctors should be reassured that migraine may not have long term consequences on cognitive function."

There is still a lot that is unknown about migraines. However this study offers promising evidence for patients and their treating physicians. More research needs to be done to understand the consequences of migraine on the brain and to establish strategies to influence the course of the disease in order to optimize treatment strategies.

Miss. congregation fights town square church ban

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- A tiny Mississippi congregation is fighting a city's attempt to ban churches from the town square, a move that the pastor said is aimed at preventing the church from taking up valuable space for shops and other businesses.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments in the case Wednesday. The dispute involves a Holly Springs, Miss., ordinance banning churches from the town square. Town officials want to make the square a business district. The case stems from a lawsuit filed by the church in January. A federal judge ruled in favor of the town in January, and the church is appealing.

Telsa DeBerry, the 44-year-old pastor of Opulent Life Church, accused town officials of relegating churches to the "third-rung" parts of town to make sure tax-exempt churches don't take up valuable space in the desirable town square.

"When the almighty dollar prevails, evil is part of that," he said Thursday. "They're looking at their tax base. A church doesn't bring in taxes."

The Opulent Life Church is a small Southern Baptist congregation of about 18. Its members want to expand by leasing a building on the town square and turn it into a church fit for a congregation of more than 100 people.

But the request was opposed in September 2011 by several town officials ? including the pastor's uncle, Mayor Andre DeBerry.

Since then, the Opulent Life Church has gained some heavy-weight supporters: the Liberty Institute, a Texas-based legal group that fights on behalf of churches, and the U.S. Department of Justice. The Justice Department filed a brief arguing that churches in Holly Springs are discriminated against because they are treated differently from other institutions, such as museums, post offices and social clubs.

Initially, the church aimed to strike down a zoning ordinance that spelled out special steps churches must take before they can open their doors. One requirement made churches get the approval of 60 percent of nearby property owners and the mayor before being able to open their doors. Other nonprofits and businesses do not have to take those extra steps.

The church alleged the ordinance violated the First Amendment and the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, a law passed in 2000 designed to force towns to treat churches the same as other businesses and nonprofits under zoning laws.

However, town lawyer J. Kizer Jones told the appellate court Wednesday that the town's board of aldermen passed a new zoning ordinance on Tuesday forbidding churches on the main town square altogether. He conceded to the judges that the previous ordinance was unconstitutional but said the new ordinance was not.

He said the town was trying to "develop retail and foot traffic, commercial business" on the square. He said the town also was concerned with traffic congestion should the Opulent Life Church grow to become a large congregation. He argued that a church's rights are not being violated because it can operate elsewhere in town, just not on the town square.

Reached by telephone Thursday after the hearing, Jones said Holly Springs has a cross-section of faiths and houses of worship, including a Muslim mosque. But he added that a town should have the power to decide how it wants to develop.

"Churches are like regulating any other activity," he said.

However, it's unfair that the town would allow museums, art galleries and libraries while excluding churches, said Hiram Sasser, the Liberty Institute's litigation director.

"It's surprising to see a city so hostile to seeing a church on the town square," he said. "You think of the town square as the apex of constitutionally protected activity; and for a church to be excluded simply because it's a church is mind-boggling."

Sarah Stevenson crashes out as Lutalo ... - BBC World News

Great Britain medal hope and current world taekwondo champion Sarah Stevenson has crashed out of London 2012 in the first round. Sarah Stevenson suffered a shock 5-1 defeat in the first round (Picture: PA) Stevenson, who won bronze in Beijing four years ago, was a firm medal hope for Team GB but fell at the first hurdle of her women?s -67kg campaign, losing 5-1 to Paige McPherson of the USA. The Doncaster athlete has been struggling with injury leading up to the Games, but says that didn?t contribute to her surprise defeat. ?I tried my best, and it has been hard. I had to come here, and go for it, I thought I could do it,? she said. ?The injury did not play a part today. It has been a mental fight every day for the last 18 months, and I did my best.? The 29-year-old, who lost both of her parents to cancer prior to becoming world champion last year, could still fight for bronze at London 2012, should Paige McPherson reach the final. ?My mum and dad would have wanted me to be here, and they would have been proud,? she said. ?I would have been forgiven for sitting and crying in a corner, but I am not a quitter.? Meanwhile controversial selection, Lutalo Muhammad, progressed to this afternoon?s quarter-finals after a final round victory over Farkhod Negmatov of Tajikstan. Lutalo Muhammad faces a lot of pressure at London 2012 after being selected ahead of Aaron Cook (Picture: AFP/Getty) Muhammad was selected for the Games ahead of European Champion Aaron Cook, but his 7-1 win over Negmatov has gone some way to proving the selectors correct. ?I am just glad to get through, it all came together in the end. The atmosphere is fantastic, and I feel a lot better now I have got my first fight out of the way,? said the 21-year-old. ?All the build-up did not matter, it is like any other tournament, and I feel a lot better off now I am through.? He will now have to wait until 3:45pm for his quarter-final fight. Pictures: Shots from yesterday?s taekwondo action at the ExCel Arena

Can we live without free will?

New research has reignited the debate about whether humans truly have free will. But what difference would it make if we didn't?

DOES it matter if we have free will? Science has been casting doubt on the concept almost from its beginnings. At first, it was the laws of physics that gave pause for thought. The Newtonian "clockwork universe", in which everything unfolds predictably from any given starting position, seemingly affords little scope for human autonomy.

That deterministic vision was overthrown by the introduction of quantum randomness. This hasn't saved free will, though. On the contrary, it has confused the concept of human agency. But few of us see this as reason to abandon our understanding of how free will operates in our everyday lives.

The evidence against free will from neuroscience is harder to ignore. In a classic experiment in 1982, psychologist Benjamin Libet asked volunteers to sit for a while and then, at their own volition, move a finger. From recordings of their brain activity, he found a signal, dubbed the readiness potential, that came before the volunteers reported they were aware of wanting to move. Libet interpreted this to mean that their brain was preparing to move before they were aware of it - that free will does not really exist.

We find the nonexistence of free will deeply unsettling. The sense of being able to choose one course of action over another is an essential part of being human. If it doesn't exist, why bother striving for success, being nice to strangers or obeying the law? It's all predetermined anyway.

For that reason, recent research suggesting that the pre-conscious signal Libet saw might just be noise in the brain may come as a relief (see "Brain might not stand in the way of free will"). The debate is unlikely to end here. But would it matter even if it was ultimately settled against free will?

Even if we don't have it, we act and feel as though we do. Our certainty can be shaken when we are presented with evidence to the contrary, but only briefly. Even those who deny it exists behave as if they have it. We may find it just as easy to ignore or rationalise away the findings of neuroscience as we have those from physics.

The question of free will is profound and fascinating. But in practical terms it matters less than we might fear. We may not have the ability to choose, but we choose to think we do.

Lawyers: Colo. shooting suspect is mentally ill

James Holmes in court, July 23, 2012. (Pool/AP)

CENTENNIAL, Colo.--James Holmes, the 24-year-old charged in last month's deadly Aurora, Colo., theater shooting, is mentally ill, his lawyers disclosed during a court appearance that featured an unusual outburst on Thursday.

Chief District Judge William Sylvester heard testimony from representatives of more than 20 news organizations asking for search warrants and other records related to the case to be unsealed.

Both the prosecution and defense argued that releasing such information would jeopardize their respective cases.

"The prosecution's duty in this case is to ensure a fair trial with a just outcome," Jacob Edson, an attorney for the prosecution, said. "We are not even three weeks from the date of this crime. Law enforcement has been working very hard to interview witnesses and victims. This is not an ordinary case."

[Related: Judge accused of creating 'unusual shroud of secrecy']

"The public is completely in the dark about what is going on in this judicial proceeding," Steven Zansberg, the attorney for several media organizations, told the judge.

Sylvester, who had issued the gag order, said he would not decide on the matter until next week.

Holmes, the former Ph.D student, looked as he has in previous court appearances: his hair dyed orange, dressed in a maroon prison jumpsuit. He did not speak during the hearing, but had "the same dazed demeanor," the Associated Press said.

There was some drama during Thursday's mostly procedural hearing. A woman seated in the second-to-last row of the courtroom stood up and said she had evidence of judicial misconduct on behalf of the public defender.

"I tried to deliver information vital to the defense of James Holmes to the public defender," the woman--in a red dress with a shaved head--said, her voice shaking.

[Related: How the media should cover mass shootings, and why it can't]

The woman, who was held by two deputies, said the defense team told her they were not willing to speak to Holmes about that information.

"It will do the victims' families justice to have this information," the woman, who identified herself as Allison Michelle Ernst, said as she was led out of the courtroom.

Twelve people were killed and 58 others injured in the July 20 massacre at a midnight screening of "Dark Knight Rises."

Backed By Palantir, Groupon Brazil Co-founders, Printi Wants To ...

American investors and VC firms (like Sequoia and Accel) have begun to turn their attention to Latin America, particularly to one of the region?s fastest growing economies: Brazil. Thanks to skyrocketing Internet penetration, the growing number of B2C eCommerce companies that have popped up over the last year and a population of just under 200 million, Brazil has become an appealing market for entrepreneurs.

Although change is coming fast, many of Brazil?s industries remain offline and are plagued by inefficiency and a lack of transparency. So, today, two European entrepreneurs are launching Printi, an on-demand, web-based solution through which they hope to revolutionize the country?s printing market.

While it?s not necessarily the sexiest of industries, co-founders Florian Hagenbuch and Mate Pencz believe that printing has been one of the slowest to innovate, telling us that right now ?Brazil is light-years behind the U.S. and Europe? in the industry. So, by leveraging the scale afforded by the Web and by streamlining ordering mechanisms, the co-founders hope to significantly reduce the time and cost it takes for local businesses to print their essential corporate, promotional, and marketing materials.

Printi?s platform offers users the ability to choose (at launch) from a product portfolio of 6,000+ printed materials, including business cards, flyers, folders, notebooks, posters, etc. On top of that, the startup offers instant price quotes (i.e. more transparency) and automated order pooling that the co-founders believe will enable the business to offer prices that are 15 to 20 percent lower than the market average.

However, it?s important to remember that building a business in Brazil inherently comes with plenty of its own hurdles. Although internet penetration in Brazil has grown from 8 percent to 50 percent in nine years and Brazilians are increasingly ready to consume online, there?s still a lot of bureaucracy in the Brazilian system. Bootstrapping is tough.

Partly, that?s due to the high cost of skilled labor in Brazil. While the payroll tax in the U.S. is about 15 percent, in Brazil it?s close to 70, and companies generally have to pay for at least one meal a day for their employees, along with transportation costs, etc. Worker protections are built into national policy, thanks to the years of hyperinflation that ravaged the country leading to a generation of risk-averse (and crippled) Brazilian entrepreneurs and startups.

Add the difficulty to fire underperforming employees, the fact that business owners can (and will) get sued for just about anything (and for Printi a somewhat capital-intensive business), and you can see why startups need early funding to get off the ground. That cushion is imperative.

To help it hurdle these obstacles and build a little padding, Printi is launching with $1.2 million in Series A funding from a group of investors from both Silicon Valley and Brazil, including Greenoaks Capital, Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale, serial Brazilian entrepreneur Fabrice Grinda and Groupon Brazil co-founder Florian Otto.

Oh, and there?s also the market opportunity. Printing is a $15 billion market in Brazil, but right now it?s mostly offline and local startups and small businesses find little to no transparency when it comes to how these companies determine their prices and how long it will take to fill orders.

While the co-founders say that competition does exist from local print solutions ? and that the FedEx Kinko?s model is represented by companies like AlphaGraphics ? most extant solutions revolve around time-sensitive, smallish orders and day-to-day office needs. So Printi wants to become the best solution for a wider range of order-types and printing needs.

The other key is that Printi offers users the ability to select from a variety of options and view prices for their order in a few minutes. There are obviously a whole mess of variables in printing (like the number of sides you want something printed on, finishing, laminations), which makes building a backend which can perform these realtime calculations is no easy task. Traditionally, in Brazil, one has to call the printer to place an order, who sends back a PDF, and if you have to tweak part of the design, the price changes, and the process begins again. But Printi is able to automate processing of those adjustments so that it can serve prices in realtime ? something you won?t find offered in Brazil.

What?s more, there are currently a lot of entities that are making money on the same order. Printi gives users a direct process as well as guidance through which they can get feedback on their artwork. People often make mistakes in preparing the things they want printed, the co-founders say, so they?ve developed a feature which checks artwork for errors and lets users know, up front, whether or not they?ll be able to print the order.

This removes a lot of the hassle and time required from small businesses to prepare their orders, and automating and optimizing the production flow helps cut down on paper loss (and costs) and minimize the margin of error. Printi also automatically pools printing orders to give its SMB and corporate customers access to those lower (and what the co-founders believe to be more democratized) prices.

Again, while the print industry may not be the sexiest market to be in, using the Web as a sales channel enables Printi to take advantage of lower fixed costs and faster turnaround ? and remove some of the inefficiency that?s endemic to the offline market. So, when one looks at the new margins this can create, Hagenbuch jokes, the model starts to look a lot sexier.

This increased efficiency has led to Printi selling over one million flyers within the first month of its beta launch and has already led to some of Brazil?s most established corporations joining as clients.

With more and more attention turning to Brazil as an emerging market, disruptive, high-margin online businesses like Printi are going to become increasingly common. Just ask Baby.com.br, which has raised over $20 million from Tiger Global, Accel and SV Angel or Open English, which itself recently took on $40+ million in funding to attack the Brazilian market.

For more on Printi, find them at home here.

Printi is disrupting the inefficient Brazilian printing space. Utilizing sophisticated technology and the scale of the internet, Printi offers lowest prices, high quality, and a broad product portfolio to corporations of all sizes. Best-in-class customer service is coupled with unrivaled turnaround times to take the experience of producing commercial and marketing materials to a new level.

Klipsch revamps Image One series headphones, intros first Bluetooth variant

DNP EMBARGO Klipsch revamps Image One series headphones, intros first Bluetooth variant with aptX earson

As if updating and expanding its in-ear headphone lineup wasn't enough, Klipsch has gone ahead and unveiled its revamped Image One on-ear set here at Irving Plaza in NYC. As we're told, the new Image One is acoustically similar to its predecessor, but now it has a more stylish and robust design that should hold up better over time. Notably, the headphones only have a single cable leading into the left earcup (rather than splitting into both cups like the original), and the leather earpads are now of the flat variety. Beyond that, the earcups can still fold flat and into the headband for storage in a stuffed bag, and an Apple-certified inline remote / mic will help you control your music and calls on the go. Best of all, pricing still remains set at 150 bones.

Rather than just tweaking the original, however, Klipsch has decided to finally enter the wireless headphone game by offering a $250 Bluetooth-equipped variant for those who hate cords. This version looks nearly identical, with the subtle tweak of having the playback controls positioned as buttons on the outside of the right earcup. The cans sport a built-in rechargeable battery, yet the set only gains 10 grams of weight (180 grams total) on top of its wired sibling -- should the battery die, a detachable cable allows for passive functionality. What's more, audiophiles will pleased to know that aptX and A2DP support is baked-in for high-quality lossless audio streaming. If your ears are already tingling with excitement, the updated Image One and Image One Bluetooth are set to hit shelves by the end of the month. We're already putting both sets of cans through their paces here at the event, so check back soon as we'll be updating this post with our initial impressions.

Ky. judge to review Christian health care case

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) ? A judge will consider whether a Christians-only health care plan should be held in contempt of court more than a year after the Kentucky Supreme Court subjected it to stricter regulations that could have meant its demise in the state.

Franklin County Circuit Judge Thomas Wingate set a hearing for Aug. 30 in the case that pits the Kentucky Department of Insurance against Medi-Share, a Florida-based cost-sharing ministry that helps pay medical bills for churchgoers.

The legal battle involves how tightly the state can regulate Medi-Share, which serves nearly 40,000 people in 49 states, including more than 700 in Kentucky.

Justices found in 2010 that Medi-Share is insurance and should be subject to the same regulations as secular health care plans, a move that could have forced the organization to serve non-Christians and to provide costly coverage of pre-existing conditions. Medi-Share says its members aren't buying insurance, but taking part in a charitable endeavor to help cover medical bills of fellow Christians and potentially have their own costs covered should the need arise.

Department of Insurance spokeswoman Ronda Sloan said she expects the judge to consider the state's motion to hold Medi-Share in contempt for disobeying a permanent injunction barring it from doing business in Kentucky.

"Medi-Share agreed to the injunction on March 1, 2011, but continues to operate in the state," Sloan said Monday.

The judge may also hear a motion to reconsider the injunction because of changes Medi-Share has made over the past year that could bring it into compliance with state insurance regulations.

Tea party activist David Adams, who has filed complaints with the Department of Insurance about Medi-Share and similar ministries, said he believes Kentucky's Christian community is closely watching the case.

"The more they look at this issue the clearer it will become to Kentucky's two million active Christians that their rights to save money on one of their biggest bills is being unconstitutionally inhibited by their state government," Adams said.

Medi-Share continues to recruit new members in Kentucky by running ads on Christian radio stations, despite the injunction.

Tony Meggs, president of Medi-Share's parent organization, Christian Care Ministry, has said he's confident that the health plan, as it operates now, is in full compliance with state regulations.

Medi-Share members affirm a statement of Christian beliefs and pledge to follow a code that includes no tobacco or illegal drugs, no sex outside of marriage, and no abuse of alcohol or legal medications. Every month, members pay a fixed "share" to cover the medical expenses of members in need. The cost usually is less than private insurance.

The organization says it helps Christians pay medical bills based on a Bible verse that urges people to "carry each other's burdens."

Actually?and without even mentioning the established international success of the Lee Ufans and Nam June Paiks of the world?it?s been a banner few weeks for art in the Koreas: First it was announced that the mystery woman who?s been photo-bombing North Korea?s Kim Jong-un (you know, the one everyone thought was his chicer, slimmer sister for a hot minute) is, in fact, his wife. And, more tantalizing still, some sort of singer to boot.

Then, this guy assembled a functional satellite, for the equivalent of $500, basically in his basement, and will be launching it into space in the name of Achieving One?s Artistic Dreams. And underground hip-hop artist PSY released what is, seriously, the best video of the summer. Now, septuagenarian South Korean businessman-turned-amateur-photographer Ahae is doing his bit for the Land of the Morning Calm. Having previously soothed viewers in New York, London, and Prague, his one-man show, Through My Window, has alighted in a purpose-built pavilion in the Tuileries Gardens, adjacent to the Louvre?the first such structure ever allowed on the museum?s grounds?were it will be on view through August 26th.

The selection in Paris has been culled from over two million photos, shot over the course of three years as part of Ahae?s effort to document the evolving sliver of natural grace that flew, hopped, and trotted its way past his studio window in the South Korean countryside: sprinting rabbits, swanning herons, leggy deer, lapping waterfowl, clouds at dusk, maple trees in autumn, and shivering ponds of speckled blues and greens that recall Monet?s Water Lilies, coincidentally a stone?s throw away at the Orangerie. The images are serene and contemplative but also super-crisp, hyper-realist, ?ber-detailed, and totally un-retouched, like visual haiku courtesy of David Bellamy. The subject matter?s initial preciousness is blunted by the archivist?s technical exactitude, the scientist?s insistence on reality, and the dreamer?s belief that he can make a difference.

Ahea is an entrepreneur, inventor, designer, chemical-company founder, environmental activist, martial artist, Taekwondo black-belt, exercise guru, painter, sculptor, poet, and photographer. He owns an environmentally-friendly multinational paint and resin conglomerate, two organic tea plantations in South Korea, and a lavender farm in SoCal; in his free time, he used to design small ships that still cruise the Han River. By his own estimate, he holds over a thousand patents, for everything from home-improvement gizmos to anti-radiation pigments. He might be able to turn lead into gold. But Ahae?s somewhat schizophrenic bio hides a serious commitment to conservation, evidenced through his organic farms, eco-friendly businesses, and wildlife protection efforts. This sincerity elevates Through My Window far above the dabblings of an ADHD tycoon with several thousand dollars worth of hi-tech toys.

With its literal opening that mimics both the camera?s limited aperture (emphasizing that the slice of life presented here is fragmentary and selective in nature) and the photo?s frame (underscoring the photographer?s actual and metaphorical remove from his subject) Through My Window places Ahae in a rich art-historical tradition that stretches from the fenestral backdrops of Renaissance portraits. Ahae seeks to capture the natural world?s unerring constancy, and seems wholly uninterested in anything that might ever be reported in Artforum.

Ahae?s very timely, super-current, and highly socially engaged point? The spot outside his window doesn?t look terribly different from what it did a century ago not because it?s representative of the world at large, but because it very much isn?t. It looks as it does only because the photographer has spent the last two decades protecting it. His images, then, enact a stillness belied by the rapidly changing ecology their maker seeks to protect.

On the surface, his millions of prints sing the obvious and cyclical song of days and seasons, death and rebirth, nature triumphing in all her majesty. But in shooting only the multiplicity of life percolating on a small strip of land he?s spent years shielding and preserving, Ahae highlights a striking contrast with those unprotected lands he doesn?t photograph; in what?s missing, he tells the less obvious and more urgent story of global warming, deforestation, and ecological apocalypse, a story that isn?t cyclical so much as flat-lining?and potentially irreversible.
