Surveying the saviors: A look at BlackBerry 10 and Lumia sales so far

BlackBerry 10 Lumia Smartphone Sales

BlackBerry posted dismal fiscal first-quarter results on Friday that sent its stock plummeting more than 25%. The May quarter marked the first full quarter of BlackBerry Z10 sales and the quarter in which the Q10 launched, but BlackBerry still shed 4 million net subscribers. Nokia has fared a bit better in recent quarters, but its new Lumia phones are still struggling to gain traction in a market dominated by Android and the iPhone. BlackBerry 10 and Windows Phone are intended to be BlackBerry and Nokia?s respective saviors, but this clash of the bantams is slow going thus far. In an effort to illustrate the companies? progress to date, mobile analyst Benedict Evans charted BlackBerry 10 and Lumia shipments to date compared to legacy platforms.

[More from BGR: BlackBerry: ?Nowhere to go but down?]

As can be seen on the charts above, Nokia is clearly much further along in the transition from its old Symbian platform to Windows Phone. The bad news, however, is that Lumia shipments currently total only about a quarter of Nokia?s smartphone shipments three years ago.?BlackBerry isn?t quite as far along with BB10, having shipped just?2.7 million BlackBerry 10 smartphones last quarter compared to a quarterly peak of about 14 million units just two years ago.

Both companies face a steep uphill climb as they struggle to compete with Apple, which now has about 400 million active iOS devices in use, and Google, which has activated more than 800 million Android devices to date.

Washington Nationals (40-40) at New York Mets (33-44), 1:10 p.m. (ET)

New York Mets promising prospect Zack Wheeler makes his Citi Field debut Sunday when they conclude their three-game series.

Wheeler, a 23-year-old right-hander, didn't get a decision in the Mets' 5-4 loss to the White Sox on Tuesday. He threw 109 pitches over 5 1/3 innings in his second big league start and allowed four hits and four runs. Wheeler broke into the majors June 18 by throwing six shutout innings in a win at Atlanta.

The Nationals counter with left-hander Gio Gonzalez, who is 1-0 over his last five appearances. Gonzalez, who hasn't lost since May 27 against Baltimore, is coming off a victory Tuesday versus Arizona when he yielded nine hits and a pair of runs in 6 1/3 innings.

Gonzalez is 3-1 with a 3.82 ERA in six career starts against the Mets. He was touched for five hits and five runs in four innings of a no-decision at Citi Field on April 20.

Dillon Gee tossed six solid innings, Daniel Murphy and Marlon Byrd each scored twice and the Mets tallied all their runs in the middle innings to take a 5-1 victory on Saturday.

The Mets lost the opener of this three-game series on Friday after the bullpen spoiled another dominant outing from Matt Harvey, but received three scoreless innings of relief Saturday to finish off Gee's fourth win in five decisions.

After getting rocked in his last start, Gee (6-7) limited the Nationals to six hits and three walks. He was charged with one run and struck out four to improve to 6-1 in nine career starts against the Nationals.

"It just seems like we're playing with a little bit more fire now," said Gee, whose team is 9-5 in their last 14 games. "It's awesome."

Murphy had three hits, while Byrd and John Buck each knocked in a run. Eric Young Jr. and Kirk Nieuwenhuis each had a sacrifice fly in the victory.

In his major league debut, Taylor Jordan (0-1) became the culprit of three errors by the Nationals' defense. He was charged with three runs -- one earned -- on five hits and two walks over 4 1/3 innings.

"He battled out of a tough situation, he pitched good," said Washington manager Davey Johnson.

Kurt Suzuki had three of Washington's seven hits and knocked in his team's only run.

The Mets extended a single-season franchise mark scoring five or fewer runs in 28 consecutive games at home. The last time the Mets scored more than five runs at home was April 24 in a 7-3 win versus the Dodgers.

The Mets have won four of the seven meetings this season.

Do Vegetarians Live Longer? - Men's Journal

More benefits of a vegetarian diet.

Skip the steaks and burgers and you might just live longer. A recent study of more than 73,000 adults found that, overall, vegetarians were 12 percent less likely to die of any cause than meat eaters. The mortality rates were even lower for meat-shunning men. And when looking at specific causes of death, the researchers found that vegetarian guys were significantly less apt to die from heart disease than meat eaters, while meat-versus-no-meat didn't seem to matter for women.

We've been hearing for a while now that vegetarian diets are ?ber-healthy and that red meat can up your chances of heart disease and certain cancers. But this study is especially telling because, besides its huge sample size, these weren't just any 73,000 people off the street. Every participant belonged to the Seventh-Day Adventist faith, which, according to the researchers, means they were way less likely to drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes than the general population and more likely to exercise and maintain a healthy weight. That right there scratches out several other serious risk factors for heart disease and potential causes of death that otherwise could have influenced the results. "This population's lifestyle characteristics reduced the likelihood that other factors accounted for the lower death rates among vegetarians," says lead study author Dr. Michael Orlich, a professor of preventative medicine at Loma Linda University in California. So, diet really did make the difference.

As for why more vegetarian men than women were spared from heart-disease-related deaths, Orlich isn't entirely sure, but he has a solid guess. "It may be that men in general have higher risks of premature death from certain causes like cardiovascular disease than women do, which a vegetarian diet helps to reduce," he says. "This is a very important question that we want to investigate further."

So what makes vegetarianism so healthful? "A diet built on plant proteins, fruits, and vegetables tends to be lower in health offenders like saturated fat and cholesterol but higher in health promoters like fiber, potassium, magnesium, and vitamins B, C, and E, as well as phytochemicals such as carotenoids and flavonoids," says Jennifer McDaniel, MS, RD, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. But that doesn't mean every meat-free food is a winner. "You still have to consider the quality of everything you eat," McDaniel says. "After all, cookies, soda, and potato chips are technically vegetarian."

'The Vampire Diaries' Season 5 Spoilers: Four New Characters Arrive at Whitmore College While Others Explore New Opportunities

Despite the hot summer sun, the vampires of Mystic Falls never rest. There's no time to sleep. There's no time to hide from the sun. They must take full advantage of their time off, and that's exactly what they're doing. Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev are both spending their vacation starring in feature films, and now other members of "The Vampire Diaries" cast are following suit.

Sara Canning, who plays Jenna Sommers on the show, recently joined the cast of the untitled psychological drama centered on Eadweard Muybridge, according to Hollywood Reporter. Canning will play the role of Muybridge's wife.

Muybridge was a famous photographer in the 19th Century who shot pictures of nude and deformed subjects. He then got his first taste of fame after pioneering motion photography. He captured animals and humans in action and paved the way for motion pictures with a zoopraxiscope device. Here's the eerie twist: he killed his wife's lover and received a justifiable homicide verdict.

While some actors are exploring various opportunities, others are joining "The Vampire Diaries" crew. Wetpaint reports that four new characters will be making their way to Whitmore College.

Nadia is "emotional and beautiful" and has been travelling far and wide with a "vengeance." Jesse is an upperclassman at Whitmore that becomes involved with the Mystic Falls gang. Megan is "too smart for her own good," and finally, Tessa is "a nobleman's daughter," which hints at a potential flashback.

Season 5 will take place primarily at Whitmore College, and aside from the additional characters, life at college will open the door for new experiences and opportunities. "We're definitely going to be entering an entire new world at Whitmore College, so we'll get to meet new friends and new enemies," said executive producer Julie Plec. "There'll be a lot of new people entering our universe that we'll get to know well - and then also maybe some new romantic interests for some of our characters."

"The Vampire Diaries" will return to The CW October 10.
