Activists say shelling kills 24 in Syrian city

BEIRUT (AP) ? Activists say troops have shelled several neighborhoods in a central Syrian city, killing at least 24.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees say the bombardment of Hama lasted until the early hours of Monday.

The LCC said 24 were killed while the Observatory put the death toll at 25, including eight children and five women.

Amateur videos showed a makeshift hospital were several people lay on the floor either dead or wounded.

The city witnessed clashes Sunday between troops and rebels.

In 1982, President Bashar Assad's father and predecessor, Hafez, ordered the military to quell a rebellion by the Muslim Brotherhood movement in Hama in an assault that killed between 10,000 and 25,000 people.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria on Sunday strongly denied allegations that its forces killed scores of people ? including women and children ? in one of the deadliest days of the country's uprising, but the U.N. Security Council after an emergency session condemned government forces for shelling residential areas.

The killing of more than 100 people in the west-central area of Houla on Friday brought widespread international criticism of the regime of President Bashar Assad, although differences emerged from world powers over whether his forces were exclusively to blame.

The Security Council issued a press statement Sunday that "condemned in the strongest possible terms" the killings in Houla. It blamed Syrian forces for artillery and tank shelling of residential areas. It also condemned the killings of civilians "by shooting at close range and by severe physical abuse," but avoided saying who was responsible for these attacks.

The council's statement said the "outrageous use of force" against civilians violated international law and Syrian government commitments under previous U.N. resolutions to stop all violence, including the use of heavy weapons in populated areas. It said "those responsible for acts of violence must be held accountable," and asked the U.N. observer mission in Syria and Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to investigate the attacks and report back to the council.

Britain and France had proposed issuing a press statement condemning the attack on civilians and pointing the finger at the Syrian government for Friday's massacre. But Russia called for an emergency council meeting saying it first wanted a briefing by Gen. Robert Mood, the head of the unarmed U.N. observer mission.

The massacre in Houla on Friday cast fresh doubts on the ability of an international peace plan put forward by U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan to end Syria's 14-month-old crisis.

The brutality of the killings became clear in amateur videos posted online that showed scores of bodies, many of them young children, in neat rows and covered with blood and deep wounds. A later video showed the bodies, wrapped in white sheets, being placed in a sprawling mass grave.

Mood told the Security Council that U.N. observers at the scene now estimate 108 people were killed in Houla, U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous told reporters outside the council chamber. The U.N. counted 49 children and 34 women among the dead.

Activists from the Houla area said the army pounded the villages with artillery and clashed with local rebels after protests Friday. Some activists said pro-regime thugs later stormed the area, doing the bulk of the killing by gunning down men in the streets and stabbing women and children in their homes.

The Syrian government rejected that narrative Sunday, painting a vastly different picture.

Speaking to reporters in Damascus, Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said Syrian security forces were in their local bases Friday when they were attacked by "hundreds of heavily armed gunmen" firing mortars, heavy machine guns and anti-tank missiles, staring a nine-hour battle that killed three soldiers and wounded 16.

The soldiers fought back, but didn't leave their bases, he said.

"No Syrian tank or artillery entered this place where the massacres were committed," he said. "The security forces did not leave their places because they were in a state of self-defense."

He blamed the gunmen for what he called a "terrorist massacre" in Houla and accused the media, Western officials and others of spinning a "tsunami of lies" to justify foreign intervention in Syria.

Makdissi did not provide videos or other evidence to support his version of events, nor did he give a death toll. He said the government had formed a committee to investigate and share its findings with Annan, who is due to visit Damascus in the coming days.

Throughout the uprising, the government has deployed snipers, troops and thugs to quash protests and shelled opposition areas.

A video released by the U.N. team in Syria on Sunday showed observers in Houla the day after the attack, meeting with local rebels and watching residents collect more bodies for burial. It also showed two destroyed armored personnel carriers ? suggesting that local rebels put up more of a fight than the activists acknowledged.

In a letter to the Security Council, Ban said villages in the Houla area have been outside government control but surrounded by a heavy Syrian military presence.

When U.N. observers visited the area on Saturday, Ban said they saw 85 corpses in a mosque in Taldou and "observed shotgun wounds and wounds consistent with artillery fire." He said "the patrol also saw artillery and tank shells, as well as fresh tank tracks" and observed that "many buildings had been destroyed by heavy weapons."

At U.N. headquarters, Russia's deputy U.N. ambassador Alexander Pankin told reporters as he headed into the closed-door Security Council meeting that "there is substantial ground to believe that the majority of those who were killed were either slashed, cut by knives, or executed at point-blank distance."

"We have to establish whether it was Syrian authorities ... before we agree on something," he said.

A press statement is weaker than a presidential statement, which becomes part of the council record, or a legally binding U.N. resolution, but it must be approved by all 15 members and therefore reflects strong Security Council backing.

Annan's peace plan for Syria, sponsored by the U.N. and the Arab League, is one of the few points of agreement among world powers about Syria's crisis, which began in March 2011 with protests calling for political change. As the government violently cracked down on the uprising, many in the opposition took up arms to defend themselves and attack government troops.

The U.N. put the death toll weeks ago at more than 9,000. Hundreds more have been killed since then.

Daily violence has marred the plan since a cease-fire was supposed to begin April 12. The Houla attack made Friday the deadliest day since the truce was announced, and has cast a shadow over Annan's visit.

In another defiant move, Syria on Sunday denied permission for Annan's deputy to travel to Damascus with his boss, a senior Arab League official said. The rejection of former Palestinian Foreign Minister Nasser al-Kidwa was intended as a slap to the Arab League, which suspended Syria's membership and approved sanctions against it last year.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. Annan's spokesman declined to comment.

The Houla attacks caused outrage among American and international officials that Makdissi's comments Sunday failed to assuage.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said he would summon Syria's most senior diplomat in the U.K. on Monday so the Foreign Office could "make clear our condemnation of the Syrian regime's actions."

Kuwait, which currently heads the 22-member Arab League, called for an Arab ministerial meeting to "take steps to put an end to the oppressive practices against the Syrian people."

Switzerland's Foreign Ministry urged that an international inquiry be convened, saying the killings "could constitute a war crime."

In Paris, the head of the exile Syrian National Council also condemned the killings.

"The kids of Houla are the kids of all of Syria," Burhan Ghalioun told reporters. "Killing the kids of Houla is like killing the kids of all of Syria."

Anti-regime activists scoffed at the government's version of events. One Houla activist said via Skype that the area had at most 300 fighters, but that none had more than rifles and that they often lacked ammunition.

"If we had anti-tank missiles, there would be no tanks left in the area," said Mohammed, declining to give his full name for fear of retribution.

Activists reported shelling, gunfire and arrest raids in opposition areas throughout the country Sunday as well as clashes between regime forces and rebels in a number of areas. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said security forces killed at least 14 civilians, while rebels killed nine soldiers.

Activist claims could not be independently verified. The Syrian government bars most media from operating in the country.

Annan's plan calls for eventual talks between all sides on a political solution to the crisis.

The U.S. hopes Russia can use its influence with Damascus to press for a political transition similar to that seen in Yemen. In February, longtime Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh passed power to his deputy in exchange for immunity from prosecution.

U.S. officials say Russia does not oppose a political transition in Syria in theory, but has not agreed to specific terms.

Members of Sri Lanka's military took place in a "Victory Day" parade Saturday to mark the defeat of Tamil Tiger separatists in a 25-year civil war.

The parade took place in the capital Colombo and there was also a two-minute silence in memory of 24,000 security force personnel who died during the near conflict, which ended in 2009, Sri Lanka's defense ministry said on its website.

In an address to the nation,?President Mahinda Rajapakse said he still could not dismantle military camps in the former Tamil Tiger-controlled areas, the AFP news service reported.

Fate of some patients hinges on Supreme Court

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Cancer patient Kathy Watson voted Republican in 2008 and believes the government has no right telling Americans to get health insurance. Nonetheless, she says she'd be dead if it weren't for President Barack Obama's health care law.

Now the Florida small businesswoman is worried the Supreme Court will strike down her lifeline. Under the law, Watson and nearly 62,000 other "uninsurable" patients are getting coverage through a little-known program for people who have been turned away by insurance companies because of pre-existing medical conditions.

"Without it, I would have been dead on March 2," Watson said of the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan, known as PCIP. That's when she was hospitalized for a life-threatening respiratory infection.

It's not clear how the Supreme Court will rule on Obama's law, but Watson's case illustrates the potential impact of tying everything in the far-reaching legislation to the fate of one provision, the unprecedented requirement that most Americans carry health insurance.

The law's opponents say if that insurance mandate is found to be unconstitutional, the rest of the law should also go, since courts should not be picking and choosing policy. The administration defends the insurance requirement but says if the court decides to overturn it, most of the rest of the law should stay.

State officials who administer the federal pre-existing condition plan in 27 states are trying to make fallback arrangements in case the law is invalidated and coverage suddenly terminates.

"Some of these individuals are critically ill and are being treated for very serious illnesses, whether it be cancer or HIV-AIDS, and we feel a responsibility to them to do what we can to see they don't lose access," said Amie Goldman, who oversees PCIP in Wisconsin.

Federal officials who administer the plan in the remaining 23 states and Washington, D.C., remain mum on what might happen there if the law is overturned.

The White House line is that Obama is confident the Supreme Court will uphold the Affordable Care Act, and his administration therefore is making no contingency plans for a reversal. None of that sounds reassuring to Watson, who owns a medical transport service in rural north-central Florida.

"It's scary," she said. "They need to look at this carefully because it is going to affect a lot of people with a lot of bad conditions who are not going to have any health care coverage."

Before PCIP, Watson had been uninsured since 2003, originally turned down because of elevated white blood cells. About three years ago, she was diagnosed with a chronic form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system. Unable to afford medications, she relied on the emergency room to treat flare-ups.

She tried applying to a major insurance company for a small business plan for her and her employees, and was quickly rejected. Then she heard about PCIP.

The temporary program is meant to serve as a patch until 2014, when the federal health care law will require insurers to accept all applicants, including cancer patients like Watson, regardless of medical history. The law's controversial mandate for individuals to carry health insurance is related to that guaranteed acceptance provision. By forcing healthy people to buy insurance, it would help keep premiums in check.

Initially, Watson could not afford the $800 monthly premium the government was asking for PCIP. High premiums are part of the reason the program has not attracted more people.

But officials retooled to make coverage more affordable. Watson applied again and was accepted. She met the basic requirements: uninsured at least six months, turned away because of pre-existing conditions, having U.S. citizenship or legal residence. Her premium is $363.

In March, Watson went to the emergency room with what she thought was pneumonia. She was admitted, and quarantined the next morning when tests showed she had an antibiotic-resistant bacterial infection, highly dangerous. She spent five days in intensive care.

Without her PCIP coverage, Watson is convinced she would have been sent home from the emergency room after initial treatment to ease her shortness of breath.

"I'm not a candidate for any for type of indigent program, and without insurance they would not have put me in ICU," she said.

"I would have gone into cardiac arrest and probably died," she added. Emergency rooms must treat the uninsured, "but they are only required to get you stable. And then they release you and tell you to go to the health department."

A government report this year found that people in the pre-existing condition plan tended to be middle-aged patients with no access to employer coverage and with medical conditions that require continuous care. The top five diagnoses: cancer, heart disease, degenerative bone diseases, organ failure requiring a transplant and hemophilia.

If the federal law is struck down, some state officials are considering taking the patients into their own, separate, state high-risk insurance pools. Wisconsin, for example, has decided that PCIP enrollees would be automatically accepted into its pool. But not all states have them. In the 35 that do, premiums would generally be higher, and there might be waiting periods.

Republicans, including presidential candidate Mitt Romney, have long favored insurance pools for high-risk patients. And Congress could take emergency action to keep PCIP going. But no assurances have been offered. Michael Steel, a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner, says Republicans are ready to work on "step-by-step, commonsense" approaches.

Watson says she still disagrees with Obama's requirement that individuals have health insurance, either through an employer, a government program or by purchasing their own plan. "I approve of some of it," she said of the law, "I don't approve of the mandatory ... insurance."

But she doesn't want to go back to depending on the emergency room.

"I have no problem paying my insurance and paying my copays," she said. "I just think I should have the right to purchase insurance."

Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan - https://www.pcip.gov/

If the Supreme Court strikes down President Barack Obama's health care law, it wouldn't just be politicians dealing with the fallout.

Nearly 62,000 patients with serious medical conditions would be out of luck.

They're the "uninsurables," people turned away by insurance companies because of medical problems but covered through a little-known program in the law called the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan. The plan would have to shut down if the entire law is invalidated.

Cancer patient Kathy Watson is worried she'll be uninsured again without the program. The Florida small businesswoman credits the coverage for saving her life this year when she had to be hospitalized with a serious respiratory infection.

She says simply: "Without it, I would have been dead March 2."

Genetic testing may not trigger more use of health services

Thursday, May 17, 2012

People have more and more chances to participate in genetic testing that can indicate their range of risk for developing a disease. Receiving these results does not appreciably drive up? or diminish?test recipients' demand for potentially costly follow-up health services, according to a new study in the May 17, 2012 early online issue of Genetics in Medicine.

The study was done by researchers with the Multiplex Initiative, a multi-center collaborative initiative involving investigators from the National Institutes of Health's Intramural Research Program, Group Health Cooperative in Seattle, and the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit.

The tests are available from a growing number of commercial producers, and health care providers have been uncertain whether people who received information only about risk would follow up by demanding diagnostic testing to check for predicted illnesses.

The study is the first to use electronic health records?rather than self-reported behavior?to measure the impact of genetic testing on the subsequent use of health services by commercially insured, healthy adults. Self-reports, which can be affected by memory lapses and other problems, tend to be less accurate.

"Our study was a best-case scenario, because we chose 15 genes reliably associated with relatively small risks for eight common diseases that health behaviors can affect," said the study's first author Robert J. Reid, MD, PhD. Dr. Reid is Group Health's associate medical director of research translation and an associate investigator at Group Health Research Institute. Those diseases were type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, high blood cholesterol, hypertension, osteoporosis, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, and melanoma. "We hope that testing positive activates patients to make behavior changes that could lower their risk, such as quitting smoking," he added, "without causing them to make many extra visits to their doctors."

"Understanding personalized genetic information is important because it is becoming more readily available and we need to figure out how to integrate it effectively and efficiently into the clinical care we provide," said coauthor Eric B. Larson, MD, MPH, Group Health Cooperative's vice president for research and Group Health Research Institute's executive director.

"There are a lot of unanswered questions about how genetic test results can be used to guide people toward making positive lifestyle and health behavior changes," said Colleen McBride, PhD, chief of the Social and Behavioral Research Branch at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). "This study goes a long way toward bringing data to these debates and shows that people are not likely to make inappropriate demands of health delivery systems if they are properly informed about the limitations of genetic tests."

Genetic tests, such as those used in this study, can detect common variants of genes associated with modest changes in the chances of developing particular diseases. "Multiplex" means simultaneously performing many genetic tests on one blood sample.

"Good next steps would be to see whether any patients were motivated to make long-term behavior changes?and whether those individuals at highest risk went to their doctors more often," Dr. Reid said. "But this study wasn't designed to answer those questions."

The study included 217 healthy people age 25 to 40 who elected to participate in genetic susceptibility testing that their health plan offered. The researchers analyzed the participants' health care use in the 12 months before genetic testing and the 12 months after it. They also compared the test group's health care use with that of about 400 similar plan members who declined the testing offer.

The researchers counted the doctor visits, lab tests, and procedures the people received, particularly those services associated with four of the eight conditions that the multiplex panel tested. Most of the procedures or screening tests that were counted are not among those currently recommended for people in this age group who don't have symptoms. The researchers found that participants in genetic testing did not change their overall use of health care services compared with those not tested.

Each person who chose to undergo the multiplex test was found to carry at least one at-risk genetic marker. Individuals in the population carried an average of nine at-risk variants. Having a risk version of one of the 15 genes on the multiplex genetic test does not mean that a person is certain to get the condition?only that he or she might have a slightly greater chance of developing the health condition. Many things other than genetics contribute to the risk of common diseases, including such lifestyle factors as diet, exercise, smoking, and sun exposure.

"Much is written about using genetics to personalize health care," said co-author Lawrence C. Brody, PhD, chief of NHGRI's Genome Technology Branch. "Some think this new generation of genetic tests will be a very positive addition to medicine; others believe they have the potential to make things worse." Dr. Brody designed the panel of genetic tests used in the Multiplex Initiative.

The NHGRI Division of Intramural Research and the National Cancer Institute, both at NIH, along with Group Health Cooperative in Seattle and the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, launched the Multiplex Initiative in May 2007. For the first two years of the study, the investigators accumulated data from 2,000 Detroit area residents who were offered a multiplex genetic test for eight common conditions.

Once enrolled, participants were asked to review information online about the multiplex genetic test and to decide whether they were interested in taking the test. Those who agreed to genetic testing met with a research educator, who provided more information about the risks and benefits of testing and obtained the patient's written consent. Test results were mailed to participants. Trained research educators called the participants to help them interpret and understand their results. The study also included follow-up interviews with participants three months after they received their results.

Viacom Gives Up Fight Against Time Warner Cable, Adds Channels to TWC iPad App

Image (1) timewarnercable.jpg for post 198780Customers of Time Warner Cable have some reason to rejoice today, as the cable company has gotten the go-ahead to add channels like MTV, VH1, and Comedy Central to its live streaming iPad app. The addition of those channels comes after both Time Warner Cable and the networks' owner, Viacom, have settled their differences and resolved litigation around the app. The legal fight erupted last year, after Time Warner Cable released its streaming iPad app, which lets subscribers stream live shows to tablets inside their homes. While many networks grumbled about the app, Viacom was most vocal in rejecting the app, taking its distribution partner to court over whether or not it had the right to stream to other devices.

?I Am Happy My With Current Supplier,? Is NOT ... - MTD Sales Training

Every day, I hear from sales people who are confused, frustrated or defeated by facing what they feel is a nearly insurmountable objection:

?I am sorry, but I am very happy with my current supplier/vendor. We have been doing business with them for many years and have no reason to change??

This position strikes terror in most sales people and many ask me for advice on how to overcome this objection. The problem is that this is NOT an objection. It is a matter of fact, and should be expected.

Waiting for You?
My question is, when you call a prospective client, what did you expect their situation to be? Did you really think the prospect would be sitting there, without a current supplier or vendor and just waiting for you to call?

It is obvious that the prospective company is already doing business with one of your competitors. Now, if that decision maker were completely unhappy and unsatisfied with that current vendor, do you think he or she would have done something about it? What businessperson would continue to do business with a vendor for which they truly did not want to do business? And if, that were the case, then would not that vendor had probably called YOU?

Common Sense
Of course, they are happy with their current supplier or vendor, and you should already assume that. It is not an objection. Therefore, do not take it as an objection and move on. Instead of trying to argue the fact that the perhaps you would make a better supplier, take the sales process as it should progress?one-step at a time.

Glad to Hear That
Do not argue the point. Instead, agree and even congratulate the prospect and let them know the reason for your contact at this stage of the sales process.

Prospect
?Well, I am really happy with our current technical training company. We have been working with them for about ten years, and we are very satisfied.?

Sales Person
?Great! I am glad to hear that Ethan. I would think that since you have been doing business with XYZ Tech for all of these years, that you are indeed very happy. I am also certain that they EARNED your business. Ethan, I am not asking you to GIVE me your business because I have NOT earned as they did. All I am asking is that you allow me to give you some valuable information about new developments in our industry over a quick 30 minute meeting. Perhaps in time, I might be able also to EARN some of your business. But in the mean time, the information will beneficial to you??

The Opposite
The situation is the exact opposite of what most sales people think: Don?t fear the prospect who is happy with their current supplier?fear the one who is not.

Happy Selling!

Deeper Look at Centaurus A

ScienceDaily (May 16, 2012) ? The strange galaxy Centaurus A is pictured in a new image from the European Southern Observatory. With a total exposure time of more than 50 hours this is probably the deepest view of this peculiar and spectacular object every created. The image was produced by the Wide Field Imager of the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile.

Centaurus A, also known as NGC 5128 [1], is a peculiar massive elliptical galaxy with a supermassive black hole at its heart. It lies about 12 million light-years away in the southern constellation of Centaurus (The Centaur) and has the distinction of being the most prominent radio galaxy in the sky. Astronomers think that the bright nucleus, strong radio emission and jet features of Centaurus A are produced by a central black hole with a mass of about 100 million times that of the Sun. Matter from the dense central parts of the galaxy releases vast amounts of energy as it falls towards the black hole.

This Wide Field Imager (WFI) picture allows us to appreciate the galaxy's elliptical nature, which shows up as the elongated shape of the fainter outer parts. The glow that fills much of the picture comes from hundreds of billions of cooler and older stars. Unlike most elliptical galaxies, however, Centaurus A's smooth shape is disturbed by a broad and patchy band of dark material that obscures the galaxy's centre.

The dark band harbours large amounts of gas, dust and young stars. Bright young star clusters appear at the upper-right and lower-left edges of the band along with the red glow of star-forming clouds of hydrogen, whilst some isolated dust clouds are silhouetted against the stellar background. These features, and the prominent radio emission, are strong evidence that Centaurus A is the result of a merger between two galaxies. The dusty band is probably the mangled remains of a spiral galaxy in the process of being ripped apart by the gravitational pull of the giant elliptical galaxy.

The new set of images from WFI include long exposures through red, green and blue filters as well as filters specially designed to isolate the light from glowing hydrogen and oxygen. The latter help us to spot the known optical jet features around Centaurus A, which were barely visible in a previous image from the Wide Field Imager.

Extending from the galaxy to the upper left corner of the image are two groups of reddish filaments, which are roughly lined up with the huge jets that are prominent in radio images. Both sets of filaments are stellar nurseries, containing hot young stars [2]. Above the left side of the dusty band, we find the inner filaments, lying about 30 000 light-years away of the nucleus. Further out, around 65 000 light-years away from the galaxy's nucleus and close to the upper left corner of the image, the outer filaments are visible. There is also possibly a very much fainter trace of a counter jet extending to the lower right.

Centaurus A has been extensively studied at wavelengths ranging from radio all the way to gamma-rays. In particular, radio and X-ray observations have been crucial for studying the interaction between the energetic output of the central supermassive black hole and its surroundings, see eso0903. Studies of Centaurus A with ALMA are just beginning.

Many of the observations of Centaurus A used to make this image were taken to see whether it was possible to use ground-based surveys to detect and study variable stars in galaxies like Centaurus A outside the local group [3]. More than 200 new variable stars in Centaurus A were discovered.

[1] The galaxy was first documented by British astronomer James Dunlop at the Parramatta observatory in Australia on August 4, 1826. This galaxy is often called Centaurus A because was the first major source of radio waves discovered in the constellation of Centaurus back in the 1950s.

[2] The origin of both filaments is not clear and astronomers still debate whether they are the result of the ionisation produced by radiation from the nucleus or the result of shocks within the gas clumps.

BlackBerry 10's predictive keyboard gets transplanted with Octopus Keyboard for jailbroken iOS

RIM's latest on-screen keyboard effort may bear a passing resemblance to Swiftkey, but it also has us itching to see how the rest of the BlackBerry 10 UI will turn out. It looks like we're not the only ones, as Octopus Keyboard aims to bring the same slick prediction interface to jailbreaking iOS users. Swiping up will access suggested words depending on which letters are pressed, while the keyboard will also memorize new vocab like the iOS original. You can see how it works in real life -- and gauge whether it's worth the jailbreaking rigmarole -- in a quick walkthrough video after the break.

News On Products Of Domain Name Online Marketing

This article has been viewed 36 times.

Every person with a site wants the coolest and best domain name; it is just that a business site has more at stake concerning the URL. Think about how you plan to get traffic and how you want to be perceived by your niche audience, and that will lend some clues about your domain name. There is always valuable information that can make differences in the outcomes of whatever it is you are trying to do. Today we present you with three very useful tips that will empower your domain name researching efforts.

Always go with the dot com name and for obvious reason, and if you buy others just make sure you also get the com TLD. Your domain will retain a higher value depending on the quality of the site. This fact about dot com domains and selling them is an industry-wide fact among those who invest in domain names. Everything changes with that TLD, and we are talking about how people perceive that extension. If you have a business, then you can choose something close to what you ideally desire in a dot com or even the dot net.

If you do not want to have keywords in the domain, no problem, but do think in terms of who you will marketing to with your URL. Just keep that one consideration in your mind no matter how long it takes you to discover the perfect name. That is how you can begin establishing yourself and your URL with the people who you are trying to target. You already know how strong a good brand name can be, and you want your domain name to be first in the minds of people in your niche. Your readers need to easily think about all those resources that are of good value, and one with an appropriate name is perfect. The one thing you want to avoid at all costs is adding to the complexities that people are faced with each day. We are willing to bet you had no idea as to the importance of finding a great URL name. Try www.gamebetty.com/games/bejeweled/bejeweled.html for the best info.

You need to register your domain name yourself and not through someone else. It is important that the control over and authority of your domain name stays with you. You need to be able to manage your domain name and take whichever steps with it that you want. Do not rely on a third party service for registering your domain name. Even if you are partnering with another person for your online business, try to do the registering of the domain name yourself so that nothing can go wrong later on. It?s important to trust when you run a business because you ought not trust absolutely anybody who comes along.

There really is not a lot more to figuring out and actually finding an available URL name that will go well with you. Always remember, you shouldn?t really delay when it comes to registering, so make the effort and brainstorm as much as you can. Unless you just like to collect domains, you should never get something that you are not sure about. Do not neglect learning more if you want to, and you never know what other useful ideas you may discover.

ClearMechanic Launches ?OpenTable for Car Repairs? | Dealer ...

San Francisco, CA ? ClearMechanic, provider of technology to improve the auto repair experience, today announced a solution that allows customers to book instant repair and service appointments online.

Launching this summer at select repair centers in the San Francisco Bay Area, customers looking for a service center can visit ClearMechanic.com, search for appointment availability at multiple dealerships and repair shops and instantly book an appointment with their provider of choice.

?Today, customers need to either wait for an emailed response to schedule an appointment, which can take up to 24 hours, or make a phone call during business hours,? said Brad Simmons, CEO of ClearMechanic. ?Even sophisticated online scheduling tools used by dealerships require three to four minutes of data entry to make appointments, which is unheard of in other industries.?

Simmons continued, ?By giving customers the ability to schedule instantly online, we can cut that time by more than half. The service department will have fewer interruptions from phone calls, fewer walk-ins and the ability to book customers during nights and weekends. It?s a win-win.?

Traditionally, dealership service centers have struggled with how to capture younger consumers. Studies show the age of average dealership service customers is now 50 years or older.? ClearMechanic?s new solution helps these service centers capture the elusive Facebook generation by giving younger car owners the option to make instant online appointments, just as they expect from restaurants, airlines and hotels.

?ClearMechanic is introducing a long overdue solution in the automotive repair industry.? It?s exactly like an OpenTable for service repair centers,? said automotive service expert Ronald Rameshnauth of OilReset.com.

The new solution will work on a pay-for-performance model, only charging the service center a flat referral fee when a customer makes a confirmed appointment through the ClearMechanic website.? If customers do not book appointments through ClearMechanic, then the service center pays nothing.

ClearMechanic is currently inviting a limited number of Bay Area service centers to participate in the pilot program, with a consumer roll-out planned for this summer. Interested Bay Area service centers, with high satisfaction scores on leading reputation sites, are welcome to submit their service centers for consideration by visiting?www.clearmechanic.com.

?

About ClearMechanic, Inc:

Founded in 2009, ClearMechanic has proven experience creating award-winning applications for the automotive repair industry. Their existing mobile and web applications have supported 200,000 repair recommendations and bring transparency and ease to repair center customers. ClearMechanic?s goal is to create a win-win for service centers and their customers and bring today?s Internet customers back to the service bay.

The One-Page Business Plan For Busy Entrepreneurs | MP ...

MP Consulting provides a simple business plan outline to help busy small business owners and entrepreneurs maximize their potential.

A good business plan should clearly define a company?s products or services, lay out how the business intends to operate, in which markets it will operate, and how it intends to generate sales and profits from its well-defined client or customer base.? The level of detail in a business plan very much depends on how you intend to use it; whether as a guide to running your business or to convince others to make an investment or partner with you in some way, or a dozen other possible uses. If you are an entrepreneur not looking to raise money or are too busy to prepare a full-fledged business plan, then you may not need to be too detailed, but it is still important to challenge yourself with how you will differentiate your product, how you will generate sales and from whom, and how much you will spend so as to still create a positive cash flow and profits.

Below I provide a guideline for the busy entrepreneur; a guideline you can use to construct a one-page business plan for your business.

Your Business Mission

What is the mission or vision you have for your business? What do you want your company to do for your customers?

The Problem or Need

Define the business problem or unmet need you have identified.

The Business Solution / Competitive Advantage.

Provide a brief statement of your solution to the business problem or unmet need. What is your competitive advantage?

The Business Opportunity / Market Size / Competition

Define the business opportunity scope and market size. How large is this opportunity (use numbers where possible, such as customers, or potential sales)? Is the market growing? Who and where are these customers? Who are your key competitors, what are their strengths and weaknesses and how can you beat them?

Marketing Goals

Define your top 4 or 5 marketing goals for the next year (or two). What do you want to achieve in terms of sales, new customers, profitability, cash flow, penetration of the market, market share, etc.?

Marketing Strategies

Define the marketing strategies you intend to employ to achieve each of your business goals and estimate the cost of the activities involved. Include your advertising and promotional activities as well as any specific sales and distributor activities. For example, you may intend to advertise in the local paper or on LinkedIn, email past customers, or run a special promotion.

Other Expenses

Include an estimate of all your other expenses: people costs, facilities, equipment needed, utilities, Internet access, phone, travel, product costs, distribution costs, legal costs, research and development costs and general and administrative costs.

Financial Projections

Think through the sales you anticipate from your marketing strategies and estimate the revenue for each month. Then calculate all your expenses. This should allow you to calculate how much cash is left over each month or your monthly profits. If you are feeling ambitious, add year two and three!

If you are interested in preparing a more robust business plan, or you need to raise money from investors who will expect a detailed plan, then you will need a copy of The Business Plan Guide.

Hopefully this has given you something to think about.? My goal is to make your life easier and to ensure you are as productive as possible. For Health, Beauty And Fitness Treatments: Visit Medspa Cincinnati ...

Posted by Cheri Knowles on May 14, 2012 in Beauty with Comments Off

Today, medspas are frequented by many individuals who are conscious about fitness, health or beauty. Such clinics are a hybrid between a day spa and a medical clinic. They have trained staff and are supervised by a medical practitioner. They handle conditions which affect your skin and your entire body. In Ohio, Hamilton county, these services are offered in many clinics like medspa Cincinnati.

Medspas in the Cincinnati area serve the county of Hamilton and surrounding regions. The clinics are run by highly experienced and qualified staff. A wide range of services are offered such as skin related treatments like aggressive chemical peels, microdermabrasion, photo-facials, botox and fillers. They provide also body treatments that contour, trim and relax the body. These include treatments like total body lifts, cellulite reduction, body shaping, breast surgery and tummy tucks.

They also offer elective cosmetic treatments that could involve non-surgical or surgical procedures. Such treatments include laser treatments, intense pulsed light treatments and laser hair removal. They also provide treatments that address aging such as skin renewal, liposuction and laser therapy among others.

Despite having a clinical atmosphere these spas provide relaxation services like massage and body treatments. Some of the clinics in this region focus on wellness too. They therefore provide services such as acupuncture, nutritional counseling and naturopathic doctor consultations among others.

The facilities in most of these spas are great thus giving clients a relaxed and comfortable feeling. The services they offer have long lasting aesthetic benefits and a genuine medical value. Their services can treat various illnesses, diagnose health problems, reduce stress and enhance outer appearance.

People have become very conscious of health, fitness, beauty and age related issues and this is why the number of people who visit medspa cincinnati clinics has increased tremendously. The services are offered by qualified and highly experienced staff in a homely environment. These clinics charge a reasonable fee for their valuable services.

Maria Burnham: Why It Is Important to Have Queer Comics

Like many other artistic avenues, queer themes in comics were often only found in underground publications or subtly intertwined and disguised in mainstream comics. Up until 1989 the Comics Code Authority did not allow any mention of homosexuality in comics, forbidding gay characters, themes, or innuendo in dialogue. Their justification for these restrictions was that comics are designated for children, and along with horror and violence, homosexuality was not a wholesome subject for children to be exposed to or raised on.

In the past couple of decades, this sort of censorship no longer exists. Comic book stores do not require a CCA seal of approval before putting a book on the shelf, and publishers have long ago realized what comic fans have always known, that comics are not just for kids. The stereotype that adult comic readers are single, socially inept males has also been thrown out the window when considering the mainstream success of graphic novels and the surge of female writers and readers alike. And yet, despite the overthrown censorship and the expanding readership and success of popular comic driven movies, there is still a severe lack of LGBT comics on the shelves.

This is changing, but the progress is slower than one would think. The LGBT section in your local comic shop probably only consists of a couple of shelves (even less, depending on where you live). Archie comics made a big splash with their first openly gay character in 2010 and then wowed readers with the fabulous cover showing a same-sex wedding in early 2012. Despite ridiculous campaigns to withdraw this comic from the shelves of toy stores, it remained for sale. Alison Bechdel, famous for her ongoing comic series called Dykes to Watch Out For, released her first graphic novel, Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, in 2006. This memoir comic, dealing with her own history as a lesbian as well as the sexuality of her father, was wildly successful in the mainstream literary world, bridging the gap between comic books and literary novels in a seemingly effortless manner. Its strong LGBT themes are critical to the story, but also critical for any reader struggling with their own sexuality or place within their family.

And this is the point. Children, teenagers, adults, and people in between are reading books, magazines, and comics as a way to escape their own lives, yes, but also to find a tenuous connection to a reality that exists somewhere other than their own worlds. A young boy experiencing thoughts or feelings that may be completely foreign to how he was raised can find some truth and validation in a comic book. Will the comic deny the existence of homosexuality completely? Will it allude to sexual tension between heavily muscled men in tights? Or will it have openly gay characters who don't treat homosexuality as something to be ashamed of or disguised?

I began writing the memoir comic Jesus Loves Lesbians, Too because I wanted to share my story with others, and I wanted a sweet and funny way to do it. I distinctly remembered what it was like being a Christian, falling in love with a woman, and not feeling like anyone could possibly relate to what I was going through. The Christian friends didn't get the "gay part," and the gay friends couldn't fathom the "Christian part." My mom purchased a few books recommended by her church friends, but unfortunately (and this may or may not be surprising to you), they were not very affirming or encouraging. Part of the inspiration for my comic stemmed from the experience of just wanting to know that someone, somewhere, knew what I was feeling.

And so I keep writing, and, more importantly, I keep reading. It is so important to support other LGBT authors, because for every bisexual or Christian or girl or sibling who can relate to my words, there is someone else out there who may relate more to some other stripe in the spectrum. Authors like Alison Bechdel, Erika Moen, Joey Sayers, and Brian Andersen are creating comics that matter. Sure, not every comic is emotionally eviscerating or filled with multi-tiered layers, but even the silly, nonsensical comics can be important to a young reader who would otherwise feel alone.

Brian Andersen has created not only one but five amazing, and amazingly queer, comics. Growing up as a comic-book-loving, superhero-idolizing boy, he finally followed his dream of creating comics in 2007. His comic So Super Duper is about a gay superhero named Psyche who doesn't realize his own gayness at first but slowly and eventually begins accepting it, making him an even better hero. (Brian has started a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to compile all 12 issues of So Super Duper into two fantastic, beautifully colored trade collections.) You can get your action fix, your humor fix, and your queer fix all in one sweet, fun-filled comic series. This is a series you can give your nephew, your cousin, your sister, or your partner, gay or straight, and they will enjoy it, because who doesn't love to laugh? Better yet, they may even relate to the endearing story of a superhero trying to break into a group while struggling with his own attractions and effeminate tendencies.
