ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? Kyrie Irving kicked off the aerial display with an alley-oop to Paul George. Cleveland's rookie point guard then showed off his long-range shooting skills.
It was so much fun that Irving wasn't too upset that all those 3-pointers came in a meaningless game.
Irving was a perfect 8 for 8 from beyond the arc and finished with 34 points, helping Team Chuck beat Team Shaq 146-133 in the Rising Stars Challenge on Friday.
Indiana's George added 23 points but the night belonged to Irving, who picked up where another No. 1 overall pick left off in the NBA's showcase game for its first- and second-year players. Wizards point guard John Wall earned MVP honors last season when he was a rookie.
Irving said he couldn't remember being so hot from the field.
"No, it's never occurred in my career," he said. "You know, it's kind of unfortunate that it comes in the All-Star game. These stats don't carry over into the season. But at the end of the day, it was still fun to get out there with those talented guys. So it was a great experience."
Cleveland's Tristan Thompson scored 20 points to lead Team Shaq. New York Knicks sensation Jeremy Lin only had two points.
This year's Rising Stars Challenge had a different format, with the rookie and second-year players mixed together on teams for the first time. The league also inserted a little more name recognition with former stars Shaquille O'Neal and Charles Barkley serving as general managers and drafting the teams.
While the teams had a different look, there was once again no real defensive effort and plenty of fan-pleasing fast breaks and flashy play.
"It's what All-Star games are, there's not a lot of defense," Team Chuck co-head coach Maurice Cheeks said.
Lin had a relatively quiet night. His biggest highlight came early in the second half when he took a pass from Minnesota star Ricky Rubio and drove it underneath for a reverse layup.
He played just nine minutes before heading to the bench in the second half, and instead mostly yielded to the more high-flying players on his team. He took just four shots.
Landry Fields, who plays with Lin on the Knicks, remained his biggest fan, holding a "Linsanity" Time magazine cover featuring him.
"It was fun to be out there with all these guys, and this guy right here (pointing to magazine) did his thing," Fields said. "Short minutes, but he still did his thing."
Irving got the game off to a rousing start with the pass to George, and Rubio turned routine passes to his Shaq teammates into behind-the-back and between-the-leg looks.
It was part of an acrobatic early tone that was fast-paced and allowed the next generation of stars to showcase open-court and aerial skills that have already made many of them fan favorites on their respective teams.
Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin had several highlights while playing for Team Shaq, catching several alley-oops and even throwing his own pass off the glass and catching it for a dunk.
"There were a lot of dunks," Team Shaq co-head coach Ron Adams said. "I think the guys had fun. I hope we didn't set a Guinness Book of World Records record for dunks given, but it was a fun game. Interesting game."

Software Development Technology ? Higher Education
The need for educated individuals to work on developing computer software for a variety of reasons is growing as technology grows. In order to fully be capable of working in this industry students must earn a higher education in software development technology. Technology and computer based schools offer degree programs for interested students. There are a number of things one should know prior to enrolling.
1) The opportunities in higher education are specifically designed to generate well-rounded students that can contribute to computer software development. Computer software is related to everything from multimedia interfaces and design procedures to operating systems. Higher education offers students the chance to enter a degree program in software development technology or applications development. Students should expect to find that most programs of this nature are undergraduate degrees. Graduate degrees typically focus on the engineering side of software development leaving students with multiple degree options in software engineering. The undergraduate degrees are a great way to enter the industry prepared for entry-level careers.
2) An associate?s degree challenges students to develop necessary skills in logical and algorithmic analysis. Study dives into design techniques, programming systems, and working with relational databases. Curriculum is concentrated on looking at all services and applications students need to know for development practices. The main overall goal of a program at this level is to have students gain practical programming techniques with the use of superior problem-solving skills. Graduating from a program usually requires around 96 credit hours, which include courses on programming, web design, software development lifecycle, and web scripting. Students learn how to work with personal and business computers. On a personal level a course examines how to operate systems. Concepts and terminology on all hardware components and the function they serve. This knowledge coupled with software development technology skills prepares students for the work they will conduct in the industry.
3) A software applications development bachelor?s degree program teaches students the skills needed to pursue careers in areas like software design, development, programming, management, and process design. A foundation in programming skills is formed preparing students to work with different computer languages and platforms. Colleges integrate this information with theory and method of software engineering procedures and standards. Many bachelor programs like this one could require students to complete approximately 180 credit hours. Education is broken down into courses that focus on general education as well as core courses. With degree specific courses students learn about application design, programming, web service, software development, database design, and program implementation. To widen knowledge a course on contemporary world culture can be taken to address the impact of electronic communication and globalization. The course centers on how fast technological advances has influenced the world. Students are able to continue education or enter into a career as a software engineer or a software programmer.
Students can step into the fast growing industry of software development by learning how to use the latest technology. Accredited programs are designed to prepare students for the industry in both technique and software-based programs. Full accreditation is provided by agencies like the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training ( http://www.accet.org ) to programs that offer a quality education. The world of software development is available to students through a higher education degree.

Sacha Baron Cohen Addresses Oscar Ban In 'Dictator' Character
Admiral General Shabazz Aladeen issues ultimatum, promises 'unimaginable consequences' if Academy refuses to lift ban.
By John Mitchell

Sacha Baron Cohen finally addressed the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' decision to ban him from attending Sunday's Oscars, releasing a video and calling in to "Today" as Admiral General Shabazz Aladeen, his character in the upcoming film "The Dictator," to promise "unimaginable consequences" if he is not permitted to attend.
Baron Cohen was initially invited to the Oscars because he appears in one of this year's Best Picture nominees, Martin Scorsese's "Hugo." The actor's in-character appearance was intended to generate publicity for the film, a tactic with which the Academy apparently took issue. Purists believe such promotion is inappropriate, as the Academy hasn't even allowed advertisements for films to run during the Oscar telecast until this year.
"Good morning, great Satan of America. How are you? I am fine, thank you. On behalf of the nation of Wadiya, I am outraged at being banned from the Oscars by the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Zionists," Gen. Aladeen said in a video address posted to the Republic of Wadiya website. "While I applaud the Academy for taking away my right to free speech, I warn you that if you do not lift your sanctions and give me my tickets back by 12 p.m. on Sunday, you will face unimaginable consequences. ... On top of all of this, I paid Hilary Swank $2 million to be my date and she will not refund a penny. My Sunday calendar is now as empty as a North Korean grocery store.
"But whatever happens, I still plan to attend director Brett Ratner's afterparty, since it is impossible to catch herpes twice," he continued. "Death to the West. And good luck, Billy Crystal. You're fantastic." At the video's conclusion, in a likely statement on what Baron Cohen believes inspired the Academy to ban him from attending in character, he concludes the video by saying, "How was that? Did I sound crazy enough?"
This morning, during a call-in interview on "Today," Cohen-as-Aladeen declared, "Normally I would be impressed by an act of cowardice by a faceless regime. But this is personal."
This isn't the first time Baron Cohen has been shunned by the Academy after declaring his intention to show up in character. In 2007, Baron Cohen was asked to be a presenter but said he would do it only if he could be in character as Borat, the fictitious Kazakh journalist he played in the blockbuster film of the same name. Oscar execs said no, and Baron Cohen did not attend the awards -- though he was not officially banned from attending the ceremony.
The actor also appeared in character as Brüno, a flamboyantly gay Austrian fashion reporter, at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards. During the ceremony, the actor, dressed as an angel with his buttocks exposed, landed in the lap of Eminem, spurring the rapper to storm out of the ceremony. It was later revealed that the stunt was rehearsed.

Plant toughness: Key to cracking biofuels?
Along with photosynthesis, the plant cell wall is one of the features that most set plants apart from animals. A structural molecule called cellulose is necessary for the manufacture of these walls. Cellulose is synthesized in a semi-crystalline state that is essential for its function in the cell wall function, but the mechanisms controlling its crystallinity are poorly understood. New research from a team including current and former Carnegie scientists David Ehrhardt (Carnegie), Ryan Gutierrez (Carnegie), Chris Somerville (U.C. Berkeley), Seth Debolt (U. Kentucky), Dario Bonetta (U. Ontario) and Jose Estevez (U. de Buenos Aires) reveals key information about this process, as well as a means to reduce cellulose crystallinity, which is a key stumbling block in biofuels development. Their work is published online by Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences for the week of February 20-24.
A plant's cell wall serves several essential functions including mechanical support: Allowing the plant to withstand the onslaughts of wind and weather, and permitting it to grow to great heights-- hundreds of feet for trees like the giant Redwood--and providing an essential barrier against invading pathogens. The cell wall is also the source of materials that have long been utilized by humans, including wood and cotton, in addition to serving as a potential source of biofuel energy.
Cellulose is the primary constituent of the cell wall and as such is the most abundant biopolymer on the planet. It is also the key molecule providing the cell wall its essential mechanical properties.
To address the question of its manufacture in plant cells, the research team, led by Seth DeBolt of the University of Kentucky, focused on different aspects of cellulose-synthesizing complexes.
Working in conjunction with Chris Somerville, Ehrhardt developed a method for observing this complex by tagging it with a fluorescent marker derived from jellyfish and imaging the tagged protein using a technique called spinning disk confocal microscopy. This technique allows individual biosynthetic complexes to be seen and studied in living cells, producing an unusually high level of resolution.
Dario Bonetta of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Debolt, Somerville and Ehrhardt all participated in screening a large number of small molecules to determine which ones interfere with cell wall building. Those that interfered were then examined at the cellular level?using the fluorescent marker?in order to see how they affect the cellulose-synthetic complexes.
Once interesting candidates were identified, a search was undertaken to look for mutant plants that showed reduced responses to these molecules. It was assumed that, because these plants were either unaffected or differently affected by these molecules, then they would have plant cell walls that are compromised or in some way unusual.
Using this process of elimination, two mutations, called CESA1 and CESA3, were found in the genes that encode certain cellulose synthase proteins and these mutated genes were further studied. Both of these mutations are predicted to be found in the part of these proteins that cross the plant cell's membrane, which forms just inside the cell wall.
Other members of the team analyzed the cellulose manufactured by plant cells that had these mutations and found defects in the structure of cellulose that these altered proteins produced.
Normally, the individual sugar chains that make up cellulose bond to each other to make a semi-crystalline fiber. This crystalline structure gives cellulose its essential mechanical properties, such as rigidity and tensile strength. This structure is also is responsible for cellulose's resistance to digestion, which provides a key barrier to utilizing cellulose as a source to produce liquid fuel.
The mutant CESAs, 1 and 3, produced cellulose with lower crystallinity. This cellulose was also more easily digested, a process that is needed to liberate sugars from cellulose so they can be converted to useful fuels.
"The team made a connection between the structure of the proteins that produce cellulose, and the structure of their product," Ehrhardt said. "This is a first step in understanding how this important property of cellulose may be regulated, opening possibilities for development of useful biomaterials and for cellulosic biofuel crops."

Sex-changing treatment for kids on the rise | MyFOX8.com ...
Photo credit: AP | Dr. Norman Spack is author of one of the reports about teens and children who insist they were born the wrong sex and are request body-altering treatments. (Dec. 2, 2011)
CHICAGO ? A small but growing number of teens and even younger children who think they were born the wrong sex are getting support from parents and from doctors who give them sex-changing treatments, according to reports in the medical journal Pediatrics.
It?s an issue that raises ethical questions, and some experts urge caution in treating children with puberty-blocking drugs and hormones.
An 8-year-old second-grader in Los Angeles is a typical patient. Born a girl, the child announced at 18 months, ?I a boy? and has stuck with that belief. The family was shocked but now refers to the child as a boy and is watching for the first signs of puberty to begin treatment, his mother told The Associated Press.
Pediatricians need to know these kids exist and deserve treatment, said Dr. Norman Spack, author of one of three reports published Monday and director of one of the nation?s first gender identity medical clinics, at Children?s Hospital Boston.
?If you open the doors, these are the kids who come. They?re out there. They?re in your practices,? Spack said in an interview. Switching gender roles and occasionally pretending to be the opposite sex is common in young children. But these kids are different. They feel certain they were born with the wrong bodies.
Some are labeled with ?gender identity disorder,? a psychiatric diagnosis. But Spack is among doctors who think that?s a misnomer. Emerging research suggests they may have brain differences more similar to the opposite sex.
Spack said by some estimates, 1 in 10,000 children have the condition.
Offering sex-changing treatment to kids younger than 18 raises ethical concerns, and their parents? motives need to be closely examined, said Dr. Margaret Moon, a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics? bioethics committee. She was not involved in any of the reports.
Some kids may get a psychiatric diagnosis when they are just hugely uncomfortable with narrowly defined gender roles; or some may be gay and are coerced into treatment by parents more comfortable with a sex change than having a homosexual child, said Moon, who teaches at the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics.
It?s harmful ?to have an irreversible treatment too early,? Moon said.
Doctors who provide the treatment say withholding it would be more harmful.
These children sometimes resort to self-mutilation to try to change their anatomy; the other two journal reports note that some face verbal and physical abuse and are prone to stress, depression and suicide attempts. Spack said those problems typically disappear in kids who?ve had treatment and are allowed to live as the opposite sex.
Guidelines from the Endocrine Society endorse transgender hormone treatment but say it should not be given before puberty begins. At that point, the guidelines recommend puberty-blocking drugs until age 16, then lifelong sex-changing hormones with monitoring for potential health risks. Mental health professionals should be involved in the process, the guidelines say. The group?s members are doctors who treat hormonal conditions.
Those guidelines, along with YouTube videos by sex-changing teens and other media attention, have helped raise awareness about treatment and led more families to seek help, Spack said.
His report details a fourfold increase in patients at the Boston hospital. His Gender Management Service clinic, which opened at the hospital in 2007, averages about 19 patients each year, compared with about four per year treated for gender issues at the hospital in the late 1990s.
The report details 97 girls and boys treated between 1998 and 2010; the youngest was 4 years old. Kids that young and their families get psychological counseling and are monitored until the first signs of puberty emerge, usually around age 11 or 12. Then children are given puberty-blocking drugs, in monthly $1,000 injections or implants imbedded in the arm.
In another Pediatrics report, a Texas doctor says he?s also provided sex-changing treatment to an increasing number of children; so has a clinic at Children?s Hospital Los Angeles where the 8-year-old is a patient.
The drugs used by the clinics are approved for delaying puberty in kids who start maturing too soon. The drugs? effects are reversible, and Spack said they?ve caused no complications in his patients. The idea is to give these children time to mature emotionally and make sure they want to proceed with a permanent sex change. Only 1 of the 97 opted out of permanent treatment, Spack said.
Kids will more easily pass as the opposite gender, and require less drastic treatment later, if drug treatment starts early, Spack said. For example, boys switching to girls will develop breasts and girls transitioning to boys will be flat-chested if puberty is blocked and sex-hormones started soon enough, Spack said.
Sex hormones, especially in high doses when used long-term, can have serious side effects, including blood clots and cancer. Spack said he uses low, safer doses but that patients should be monitored.
Gender-reassignment surgery, which may include removing or creating penises, is only done by a handful of U.S. doctors, on patients at least 18 years old, Spack said. His clinic has worked with local surgeons who?ve done breast removal surgery on girls at age 16, but that surgery can be relatively minor, or avoided, if puberty is halted in time, he said.
The mother of the Los Angeles 8-year-old says he?s eager to begin treatment.
When the child was told he could get shots to block breast development, ?he was so excited,? the mother said.
He also knows he?ll eventually be taking testosterone shots for life but surgery right now is uncertain.
The child attends a public school where classmates don?t know he is biologically a girl. For that reason, his mother requested anonymity.
She said she explained about having a girl?s anatomy but he rejected that, refused to wear dresses, and has insisted on using a boy?s name since preschool.
The mother first thought it was a phase, then that her child might be a lesbian, and sought a therapist?s help to confirm her suspicion. That?s when she first heard the term ?gender identity disorder? and learned it?s often not something kids outgrow.
Accepting his identity has been difficult for both parents, the woman said. Private schools refused to enroll him as a boy, and the family?s pediatrician refused to go along with their request to treat him like a boy. They found a physician who would, Dr. Jo Olson, medical director of a transgender clinic at Children?s Hospital Los Angeles.
Olson said the journal reports should help persuade more doctors to offer these kids sex-changing treatment or refer them to specialists who will.
?It would be so nice to move this out of the world of mental health, and into the medical world,? Olson said.

The secret world of Arriettty - movie review | Gather
When I discovered that this animated movie was based on the book series called The Borrowers, I just HAD to see it. A number of years ago, a television movie was also based on that series, and it was AWFUL!
This Japanese movie, dubbed into English, was produced by same man who created Spirited Away. I was entranced by it. The characters, the story line and the artwork were all amazing.
The concept is that there are small people living in the walls who take - borrow - little items we leave lying around. I remember a scene from the book where an empty match box is made into a bed (the people are THAT little). In the movie, a dollhouse had been created when the mother of the main character (boy) had been a girl herself - especially for the Borrowers to live in, but they never came. Their lives are based on the premise that if they're seen by a human, they have to leave.
The movie was based on the first book. I wonder if there'll be sequels. I'd like to see more.

4 Steps to Upgrading Your Time Management System
We all share the same finite resource - time. No matter what we do, we can't magically add more time into our days, or extend our weeks. Therefore, how well we manage our time, and our tasks, is critical to our overall success. There are many time management books and systems out there, along with ones that you can create from whole cloth. For off-the-shelf systems, choosing one can be daunting - there are so many, and it's hard to know what criteria to look at when you're selecting one to try. Here are a few key things to keep in mind to help you:
Big picture or small tasks? Are you more of birds-eye view person, focusing on ideas and high-level plans, or do you really like planning out every detail? Different systems approach these two perspectives in different ways. Getting Things Done is about getting the small tasks under control so you can focus on the big picture, while FranklinCovey is about focusing on the big picture to help guide you towards the right small tasks. It's all a matter of perspective - both the one you already have, and the one you'd like to gain.
How planned do you like to be? Each of us varies on how much we like our days to be structured. Some of us thrive with lots of structure and have most of our day fully planned, while others work better when just a few key items are planned and the rest of our time gets filled as each day progresses. One method is not necessarily better than the other - and there's certainly a continuum between them. Systems vary on how much structure they encourage - for instance, Action Method helps you plan and strategize your individual tasks, while The Now Habit's Unschedule leaves your day more open. Choose a system that fits what works well for you, and you'll likely be more successful.
Learn and use your system and give it a fighting chance. Once you've chosen a system, make sure you take the time to understand not only its big tenets, but also the ins and outs of how it's meant to work on a daily basis. Listen to podcasts or read blog posts from the makers of your system, or work with a productivity expert to help guide you through the process. As you gain understanding into your chosen system, make sure that you've given yourself adequate time to practice using it. As with anything new, it takes both understanding your new time management system and putting it into practice for a while before you can see what is - and what isn't - working well for you. Especially with time management, change typically doesn't happen overnight.
Use bits and pieces. Whatever system you choose, don't feel obligated to use every single element of it - especially if you find that parts of it don't work well for you or if all your needs are not fully addressed. Use the parts that DO work well for you and if there are areas where your chosen system doesn't fit the bill, choose elements from other systems to fill in the gaps. For instance, maybe some of the big-picture planning tools from your main system work really well for you, but you find that the day-to-day task planning isn't really your cup of tea. In that case, choose a daily planning method from another system. After all, it's your time - how you plan it should fit you!

To perform with less effort, practice beyond perfection
Whether you are an athlete, a musician or a stroke patient learning to walk again, practice can make perfect, but more practice may make you more efficient, according to a surprising new University of Colorado Boulder study.
The study, led by CU-Boulder Assistant Professor Alaa Ahmed, looked at how test subjects learned particular arm-reaching movements using a robotic arm. The results showed that even after a reaching task had been learned and the corresponding decrease in muscle activity had reached a stable state, the overall energy costs to the test subjects continued to decrease. By the end of the task, the net metabolic cost as measured by oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide exhalation had decreased by about 20 percent, she said.
"The message from this study is that in order to perform with less effort, keep on practicing, even after it seems as if the task has been learned," said Ahmed of CU-Boulder's integrative physiology department. "We have shown there is an advantage to continued practice beyond any visible changes in performance."
A paper on the subject was published in the Feb. 8 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience. Co-authors on the study include postdoctoral fellow Helen J. Huang and Professor Rodger Kram, both in CU-Boulder's integrative physiology department. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health.
The study involved 15 right-handed test subjects who used a handle on a robotic arm, similar to a joystick, to control a cursor on a computer screen. The tasks involved starting from a set position to reach for a target on the screen and involved both inward and outward arm movements, Ahmed said.
As part of the study, test subjects had to exert more energy in some reaching movements when the robotic arm created a force field, making subjects "push back" as they steered the cursor toward the target. With repeated practice of moving the robotic arm against the force fields, the subjects learned the task by not only cutting down on errors, but effort as well, according to Ahmed.
The test subjects first performed a series of 200 reaching trials with no force field to push against, then two sets of 250 trials each when pushing back against the force field. The experiment ended with another 200 trials with no force field, said Ahmed. A metronome was used to signal the test subjects to move the robotic arm every two seconds toward the target during the trials.
Each of the test subjects wore a nose clip and breathed through a mouthpiece to chart the rates of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production, a measure of metabolism. The research team also collected surface electromyographic data by placing electrodes on the six upper limb muscles used during reaching tasks: the pectoralis major, the posterior deltoid, the biceps brachii, the triceps long head, the triceps lateral head and the brachioradialis.
"What is unique about our study is that we are the first group to measure metabolic cost in addition to muscle activity while performing a physical reaching task," said Huang, who performed most of the research and was first author on the Journal of Neuroscience paper. "The results are very surprising and challenge the widely held assumption that muscle activity entirely explains changes in metabolic cost."
The study suggests that efficient movements ultimately involve both efficient biomechanics and efficient neural processing, or thinking. "We suspect that the decrease in metabolic cost may involve more efficient brain activity," Ahmed said. "The brain could be modulating subtle features of arm muscle activity, recruiting other muscles or reducing its own activity to make the movements more efficiently."
The results could be applicable, for example, to stroke patients who have to re-learn to walk, Ahmed said. "The rehabilitation process should not necessarily stop if the patient reaches a plateau in performance," Ahmed said. Continued practice reduces the metabolic cost of the task, an indication the brain still may be learning something," she said.
"Using the robotic system, we can understand the principles underlying the control of human movement and can apply those ideas to design rehabilitation programs that may allow stroke patients to re-learn their movements faster, to retain that learning and to transfer that learning to other tasks as well," she said.
So whether it is playing a musical piece over and over again even after you have the notes and timing down cold, or throwing a ball or swinging a racket after your coach tells you things look great, there appears to still be a benefit to practicing, Ahmed said. "Just because someone can perform the task well doesn't mean there is not added benefit to continued practice."
